Billericay 3-3aet Maldon, Billericay win 5-3 on Pens

Recommended Posts

Incident packed game to put it mildly.

Team

McMahon

McSweeney Heffer Dormer Kerrigan

Game Hunter Ryan Hodges

Elder Poole

Subs

Vincent for Kerrigan (Vincent went RB, Dorms LB, Macca CB)

Collins for Game

Scoberg for Poole (Scoberg played up front)

After an hour we were 3-1 down - all goals much the same, tried to play football in our own half, lost possession and didn't react so were punished. Our goal came from a deflected Dave McSweeney shot at a corner.

80 mins Macca volleys home to make it 2-3. Minutes later Steve Portway sent off for retaliation - stuck out a boot after being fouled by Warren Ryan - booked.

Minute after that 3-3 - Heffer.

Extra time - each side had one good oppo - Nathan had a header palmed over, then Whelpdale (Maldon's best player by a mile) shot wide when he should have scored. McMahon sent off for handling outside area, Dorms went in goal, then Ryan to LB

Pens

Both teams scored first 2, Hunter and Hodges for us

Collins scored our 3rd, Dormer saved theirs.

Ryan hit our 4th, their keeper scored theirs

Then Dormer scored our 5th to win us the cup. Happy days etc

Congratulations to the lads. Although I wasn't there tonight, to come back from 3-1 down so late in the game to force extra time, then survive the extra thirty mins having lost our keeper and win the penalties with our captain/centre-half in goal, saving AND scoring one, all shows tremendous team spirit and should stand us in good stead for the season ahead. Well done !

The first half was our best half. Loads of possession but we couldn't convert the chances we had into goals. Nathan was particularly unlucky. Maldon scored with what was their first chance on goal and we was playing catch up. We continued with the pressure and eventually equalised through Macca latching onto deflection. I think it was from a Hodges free kick, Nathan back headed the ball towards goal, mayhem ensured and Macca was there to convert. We were definately the stronger side during the half.

The second half was...well...er...was a half of errors really. The first period wasn't pretty with our defence still wanting to play the ball out and we got caught...twice. Maldon's third goal was a peach. A short pass out to Wozzer, which didn't really have the legs to reach him but if Wozzer had read it, maybe it wouldn't have gone to the Maldon player who produced a lovely chip to beat Billy.

Then madness set in...a clash between Wozzer and Portway led to Portway lashing out with his boot (I was told narrowly missing Wozzers manhood), which led to Portway being sent off and Wozzer picking up a yellow (hey, last season it would've ended up with Wozzer reacting...the lad is coming on). We then upped the tempo, showed great character and a bit of that class we know this team have and clawed back into the game. Macca again and the Heffer (a great strike from outside the box) and extra time was called for.

Both teams were tired but Billericay had the pick of the chances. Nathan coming close a couple times (again - one of the chances led to the Maldon keeper pulling off a wonder save!!!). In the second half of extra time, madness part two...Through ball for the (lone) Maldon striker to run on to, Heffer(?) was trying to cover, Billy came out and was judged to have caught the ball outside the box. Billy gets sent off and Dorms goes into goal (having used up our three subs). The closing period of extra time was scrappy but Maldon and us did go close to winning the game.

Penalties!!! Billericay win 5 - 3 with Dormer saving one and scoring one.

Now, negatives and positives...we'll start with the negatives...We still allow teams to "come on to us". We have this habit of allowing teams to "boss" us when we have more than enough ability to boss them and dominate games. We still like to "faff" about with the ball in front of goal and at times around their box when we are pressing to score. Still get sucked into playing too long at times. Amoungst others...our strikers really need to get scoring.

Positives - When we do "boss" teams, we are one of the best in the Ryman. We have players that can assert themselves on the game and our team spirit is fantastic...which then leads onto the fightback and pride on the pitch...If we did this from the off (well, like we did in the second half), we would be really awsome (and there would be no need for the "fight back"). Our fitness is amazing (especially Hodges...okay he was knackered at the end of the game but he lasted 120 minutes and could still put those ball across). Nathan is a handful for any defender. His stregth in the air is awesome and running at defenders is fantastic. And we have some great penalty takers...awsome penalty takers. And we won our first trophy since 1991, okay, it's the Eastern Floodlit Cup but it is still silverware.

We did it the hard way and extra time was something I'm sure Matt Jones wouldn't have wanted (him and the players)...injuries and our keeper being sent off may cost us but thanks are due....and congratulations to the players and manager.

Well done lads.

Oh and one more thing.

Maldon were worthy opposition. Dean Parrot showed that he is still a quality player and their No.7 was awsome (god, I'm using that word alot today). He was skillful and never gave up and even up to the 120th minute was full of running.

I wish them well for the coming season. They should do well.

Well Done lads, excellent fight back after we looked dead and buried, everbody played their part. We all like to make our comments so here goes:-

Well done Warren for not retaliating to a nasty kick from Portway.

Don't like the central defence pairing of Heffer and Dorms, doesn't seem a natural position for either. We seemed to have a much better balance when Dorms went to left back and Macca went to centre back ( more selection problems for manager as I thought Vincent did well at right back)

Nathan was magnificent as ever, his efforts deserve masses of goals. I thought Seb actually helped Nathan up his game after Tom was substituted. IMO Seb looks VERY fast and tricky and should be persevered with. He needs to get into the box more with the ball and will earn us loads of penalties which we are FANTASTIC at scoring!!

PS In the excitement, I didn't hear Gazza announce the 50;50 winner - was it 07370 by any chance, I still have the ticket!!
