Why did McCann touch that free kick ?

Someone will surely correct me if I'm wrong, but I was convinced the referee clearly signalled the free-kick that Wealdstone scored from as indirect. If so, why didn't an experienced keeper have the presence of mind to leave it alone - if it goes straight into the goal without anyone else touching it then it would have resulted in a goal-kick being awarded.

 

Did it take a deflection on the way (didn't look like it from the other end) which would have forced the attempted save ?

 

For anyone who can answer that, perhaps they can also explain why Deji Davies was persisted with after two embarassing performances ? Nothing personal - he may well have a future ahead of him, but it will only be once he can demonstate the most basic skills. I'm not as much of an admirer of Sammy Winston as most Slough fans - but there is not one aspect of the game that I would rate Davies in front of him. Is there anyone on this forum who thinks Davies should have started instead of Sammy ?

Correct, it was an indirect free-kick and McCann made a total hash of it.

but be fair, I dont think any keeper in his right mind would risk not saving a free-kick in case it wasn't indirect after all, or if the ref had judged it had taken a deflection. And with that ref last night, anything could have happened !

The ref we had last night was England's linesman representative at the World Cup. I believe he was involved in the Final. God help us!

I was in the away stand and in fairness to Gary he was screaming at Ryan Spencer or Williams for about 30 seconds (Can't remember which one) to get on the end of the wall, but by the time the Wealdstone player shot the wall was not set up properly and there was a big gap.

 

As for leaving the ball because it was indirect you can't leave it as the ref might have seen a deflection and Gary would have looked silly if he let it in then.

 

We change the goalkeeper's too often. They have been chopped and changed so often this season one must stay and in my opinion Gary did not do a lot wrong on Tuesday, so why drop him?

 

Dom's a good keeper and his time will come, but not quite yet I hope.
