OVER the last couple of years Geylang United

have been undergoing a rebuilding process,

blooding youngsters, and counting on a couple

of old heads and a few foreigners to guide

them along.

Tonight, though, the club will have to

do without one of their star signings when

they take on the Korean Super Reds in an

NTUC Income-Yeo’s S-League clash at the

Yishun Stadium, after the Eagles dismissed

ace marksman Kim Grant yesterday.

Grant, who joined the club in January in

a move from Sengkang Punggol, was given

his marching orders for indiscipline.

In a six-paragraph letter addressed to

the Englishman, Geylang general manager

Ong Yeok Phee said Grant had breached

club rules when he used vulgar language at

the club office on June 5.

When contacted last night, Ong said:

“Grant breached the rules when he used the

language at the office in front of a few other

players as well as other staff.

“The vulgarity was targeted at the club

and being Asian, we felt it was unacceptable.

“The club management deliberated over

the incident for a few days and decided to take

action against him.”

Grant apologised for his behaviour a day

after the incident and sent a letter of apology

to Ong. But when he turned up for training,

coach Lim Tong Hai informed the striker

he was suspended till further notice.

A dejected Grant, Sengkang’s top scorer

last season with 11 goals, revealed yesterday

that the trouble started on June 4

when he requested for leave to return home

to England to see his six-year-old son.

He said: “After our match against the Korean

Super Reds on June 13, our next game

is scheduled almost a month later (July 8

against Tampines). I felt it was the best time

to take leave.

“I am entitled to 14 days leave at the

club’s discretion and they allowed me to take

10 days. That upset me quite a bit because

I am not so lucky to be able to see my son

every day. I felt like as though the club were

deliberately stopping me from spending time

with my son.”

Grant admitted he used foul language at

the Geylang club office on June 5 when he

was about to sign the leave form.

“I admitted it was an error and I apologised

for it,” said the 34-year-old.

“It is part of my culture and I did not say

it to anyone’s face.

“I looked down and exclaimed angrily. I

did not think it would hurt anyone.”

Now, Grant has asked the Football Association

of Singapore to convene a Players’

Status Committee to look into his sacking.

Geylang will not pay Grant any compensation,

even though he is contracted till

November.

Grant, a former Charlton Athletic striker,

also filed a complaint with Fifa last night.

But Geylang are unfazed.

Said Ong: “It is within his rights to appeal

to Fifa. We will make our representations

if we are questioned about the incident.”

With striker Fadzuhasny Juraimi out injured,

the latest incident is a big headache

for coach Lim. “It is unfortunate but we will

have to make do without him for the time

being,” he said.

“Hopefully we will be able to get a striker

in during the July transfer window.

“We will have to cope with Razali Johari

and Syed Fadhil as our strikers until we get

a replacement.”
