Enfield vs Skelmersdale (1970) programme

It is my view that the side 63/64 was the best team that Enfield ever had.

You have mentioned Roger Day. He had a character which could dominate the midfield. He would always be encouraging and guiding other players.

"I'm behind you. I'm with you." Then on receiving the ball from a team mate. "I dont want it." In one game at the stadium he so bemused the opposition that he stopped stood on the ball then moved away one yard, two yards. His marker was just staring at the ball like a rabbit in headlights. Then Roger starting commanding the forwards. "To me Jim". "Go left Joe". The opponents acted as though there was a free kick until one more alert then the others cottoned on that the ref hadn't blown and made a lunge for the ball - Roger quickly scooped it away and laid on the cross.

Other members of that side were Peter Terry - a copper and, I believe, father to Steve and grandfather to John - They all have the same widow's peak to their hair - though others have argued with me about that. Peter gave away more penalties then any other player before or since. But he never spoke back to the ref.

Then there was the forward line of Jim Quail and Tony Edwards with Terry Howard and Roy Thomas dazzling on the wing. Tom Lawrence (Still Enfield's leading goal scorer) fractured his skull at Coventry in warm up for the GB Olympic side and missed the 64 cup final. If Malcom Mitchell hadn't broken his arm I reckon that they would have won the cup and got the recognition that they deserved.

Half backs were Ray Kingsland and Roy Sleap. Quail and Sleap were ex Hendon and were part of the reason why the Hendon fan mentioned earlier hated Enfield as we broke up their side.

Was it not Peter who caused a game to be abandoned by refusing to leave the field after being sent off?, I think it was at Grays.

For the record it Was Roger Day who punched the ball in at Highbury.

Nobody punched the ball in at Highbury. I had a good view of the goalmouth, and he was pushed onto the ball. The referee did well to see the incident and adjudge it correctly. If, after the push, he had indeed punched the ball in, the referee would surely have awarded a penalty.

Any consolation we drew 4-4 in an amazing game with Ray Kingsland Roger Day (2 pens) and Roy thomas scoring for EFC. If I remember we were 3-0 down very quickly but got stuffed 3-0 in the replay....

Later tho EFC got them again in the Amateur Cup and we drew at home 1-1 with Terry Howard scoring (I remember we used to sing Roll out the Barrell as he went down the wing!!)but beat them 2-1 with Doris Day scoring both for us. Happy Days...
