AWK
Final score: Biggleswade United 1 Luton Town 5. Did a big report only for my computer to crash right at the end Basically Biggleswade took a 15 SECOND lead, Luton equalised to go in at half time 1-1 before dominating the second period and adding another four. I shall post some pictures from the match tomorrow.
Rhodes
AWK - Yes know the feeling, it happens to me all the time. Sounds like a really good game particularly first half, do we know whether our friend Robbie0 played a part for Biggleswade United.
RobbieO
Fraid so rhodes! Before AWK gets this in, i was rubbish! Fair play though, they were [****!!****] hot after we scored they pissed all over us. That Calvin Andrew aint bad is he! Our first competetive preseason game so no complaints from the Biggs Utd camp. All credit to Luton and their officials - apparently donating their share of the receipts to us. A proper community club.
Rhodes
RobbieO - I'm sure you are being modest and you weren't as bad as you say, afterall there is a huge gulf in status between the two Club's so 5-1 is no disgrace and you were holding them at the interval. What sort of crowd was present as AWK didn't touch on that, I'm sure there were 250-350 which is unheard of for Second Meadow isn't it. Don't take it too badly anyway, if you do have a bad performance then save it for 13 September when you come to Hendon.
RobbieO
My touch was very poor. I had a decent run in the second half but my fitness was lacking. Still i got to skipper my side against my supported Team, something to tell the grandkids in the future! Apparently 350 approx there but im waiting for a official figure
AWK
In the end the Hatters won comfortably, but not many would have predicted such a one sided scoreline at half time. It was a terrible start for Luton though, from the kick off the ball was passed to the Town's right back (Chris Pendleton?) and as he weighed up his options his team mates were telling him to keep the ball, with all the Luton players in front of him marked up he decided to pass the ball to the keeper only to get it badly wrong and instead gave it straight to the Biggleswade's no.10, the striker then cooly went around the keeper before slotting home to give United the lead in there first ever Beds Premier Cup Final. After such a bad start the Town regrouped and started to put Biggleswade under pressure with Danny Stevens particulary proving troublesome. Though Luton had a lot of the ball clear cut chances were few and far between, and you felt that whilst Biggleswade were giving everything they had to defend their lead Luton were playing well within themselves. Calvin Andrews had a couple of efforts that looked dangerous and Stevens looked like tapping in but just couldn't get to the ball, however Biggleswade had a couple of chances as well, after good work down the left a dangerous cross was whipped in only to be just deverted over his own crossbar from a Luton defender and then following a free kick a free header at the backpost could have lead to more danger, but with three team mates totally unmarked in the centre the Biggleswade player looked to have been caught in two minds with what to do and instead headed tamely at the keeper. Calvin should have equalised with the best chance of the match, he was put through on goal but as it looked easier to score than miss he blazed high and wide! Still the goal wasn't long in coming and and it was the right back who made admends with an excellent assist, after an attempted throughball was cut out by an United defender in his box he then took to long to clear and Pendleton got a takle in to win the ball, he then skimmed past another defender before drawing the keeper and passing the ball into the centre for the awaiting Ashley Hamilton to tap in. Half time 1-1 In the break I was fairly confident Luton would go on to win, but I felt they hadn't pushed themselves enough yet-the second half they would though as went on to dominate, playing some excellent football with it. The second goal wasn't long in coming in the second period, Danny Stevens picking the ball up on the right before cutting in and dispatching a left footed drive into the far corner, the keeper got a hand to the ball but couldn't keep it out, and judging by the goalies face he felt that he could have done better. Luton remained on top and continued to attack at will, the ball was played down the left which saw a Biggleswade defender handle it in desperation to stop it falling to Calvin, as the ball reached its destination anyway the ref played advantage, Calvin with a player in front of him looked to play a team mate in but with no one making the run he wanted he simply moved the ball to the right before unleashing an unstoppable shot into the top right corner. With the Luton midfield now dominant (especially the no.8, Shane Hill?) it was looking like how many they would now score and the fourth soon followed. After a superb move by Luton's midfield the home team keeper pulled off a great save to conceed a corner, from the resulting set piece the ball landed up on the left wing, and a right footed cross decieved the Biggleswade defence who got to far underneath it allowing Calvin to calmly chest down before vollying home. Following a good spell of passing the ball was at the feet of Matt Kenneford, who finding himself in space on the edge of the area hit a left footed shot low and hard to the left of the keeper to make it five. Luton had a couple more chances, Calvin looked odds on for his hat trick before being pushed (ref didnt see it!), and the crossbar was rattled in the dying seconds as well. RobbieO, thought you showed excellent work rate in the first half, always trying to find room and close down the Luton defenders, second half you was more up against it and didn't have a lot of chance. Probably produced the best moment for Biggleswade (other than the goal obviously) with your run in the second period, good ball to the left at the end of it and it looked like you were going to get a goal back at the time but a bit of desperate defending kept it out. Thought it was good that both teams had their picture taken together at the end, they dont normally do that. Very much enjoyed my night out yesterday, its a good club you have got there and fingers crossed your be playing in the Beds Premier Cup Final next season as well. AWK
There must have been a good 300 + there Rhodes, thankfully Luton didn't have a first team game on the same day which they have had for the past few seasons which would obviously have a knock on effect on the size of the crowd. Last season we played Stevenage on the same day as Arlesey Town, so I drove down to Broadhall Way and brought myself a programme before driving back to Arlesey to watch the match!! What do you mean sad!!!!!!
Rhodes
AWK - Excellent stuff and thanks for going to the trouble of posting the report, a 300 plus crowd must have made United a good few quid assuming they charged at least a fiver on the gate and then bar takings on top of that, I know RobbieO drinks like a fish. Was there a programme for the game as I would like to get hold of one, I see incidentally from a newsletter I received from the league yesterday that the 61FC won the best 2nd Division programme award for last season so well done on that, clearly your efforts and concientious approach paid off. AWK
You will be glad to know that there was a programme issued for the match Rhodes, priced at a £1. Hopefully they will have one left for you, but it seems that there were over 400 at the game so they must have shifted a few. Good news about my programme, thanks for that. I normally get good feedback from members of the SSML comittee but its always good to see your programme recognised like this.
Rhodes
AWK - I'm surprised you hadn't heard the news as you're the programme editor afterall. Perhaps RobbieO could make enquiries about the Biggleswade United v Luton programme for me and bring one on 13 September if there are any left when they come to play us in the Challenge Trophy, I'll buy him a pint for his trouble. Biggleswade must have made a fortune the other night but fair play to them for getting the game with Luton on.
AWK
Haven't recieved anything from the SSML about the programme, perhaps Richard knows but he never mentioned anything the other day when i spoke to him at Biggleswade. Yes Biggleswade done a very good job on Tuesday night and I have heard a lot of positive comments about them since. Its just a shame that the Premier Cup is just a one off now as it would give Biggleswade Utd a good chance of playing Luton each year, as it stands to be in it next season they will have to win the Senior Cup again. Rhodes
Well at least, as RobbieO pointed out, it gave him an opportunity to play against Luton which will be something to tell his grandchildren, did you get a chance to talk to each other after the proceedings although it sounds like he was very critical about his performance and he was about to top himself. I was sent the newsletter by the league that announced you had won division 2 programme of the year so your Club Secretary should have a copy, the other divisional awards were Broxbourne Borough in the Premier Division and obviously Hoddesdon Town in division 1 as well as unsurprisinly the overall award, hopefully we can give them a run for their money this season which will go down like a lead balloon with Jane over there. AWK
Unfortunately i never got to speak to RobbieO, though i do think he is being harsh on himself. Certainly i could see why he gives SSML defences a hard time but he was up against players who should be at a lot higher level, and with Mike Newell and Brian Stein watching they would have wanted to impress. I shall have to get a hold of your programme this season, it sounds like its going to be very impressive though if Hoddesdon feel like their crown is at threat they will probably add another 100 pages!! Rhodes
AWK - Well I have your address in Dunstable so I'll post one to you following every home game and you can do the same after your home games, your programmes must be half decent to have won the 2nd division award. We came fourth in the 1st division awards last season and I wasn't overly impressed at all so we will certainly be in with a shout although as you say if Jane gets wind that I am on her tail she will just add another hundred pages to the Hoddesdon Town programme, she must work for a printing company I would have thought or else a firm that publishes telephone directories.
