What on earth is this AWK, don't you think all these competitions are over kill and it's playing for playing sake. I've noticed that you always seem to get home draws, even if you beat, or should I say when you beat White Notley in the Second Round you are at home again to Takeley or Standow and Puckeridge giving you a good chance to reach the quarter final. I suppose Brache Sparta are the favourites for this competition, on paper they should walk it.

The Anagram Records Trophy, formerly the Cherry Red Books Trophy, is a competition for sides that are not eligible for the FA Vase and all the rounds are played on FA Vase dates. It is open to clubs in what were the Isthmian Feeder Leagues prior to the FA's restructuring. When I ran the competition, there was talk of the FA looking at possibly developing it into a national competition to replace the old Amateur Cup.

Originally, in the first two rounds clubs were not drawn against sides from their own league or against teams they had met in the competition before as it was felt clubs would be more attracted to what was then a relatively new competition if they knew they would be playing different opponents and, if drawn away, visiting areas that they wouldn't normally travel to. Clubs could treat it as their "FA Cup" if they wanted to. It only became an open draw from the third round onwards. However, as years passed, that became a logistical nightmare and I'm not surprised it's now an open draw from the beginning.

The Essex Olympian League clubs tend to be very strong in this competition. White Ensign and Manford Way are two clubs that normally do very well and would expect to be amongst the favourites.

Thanks for this insight, very interesting. Would Kentish Town have been eligible for the competition as we are not in the FA Vase this season, we've been told that we will definitely be in it next season as well as the FA Youth Cup so that's something to look forward to. Hopefully we will also be in the SSML Premier Division by then too but I gather that won't make us eligible for the FA Cup just yet.

There not a lot I can add to Potters Bar's excellent summary except that I know the players and managment really look forward to this competition. The chance to play different opposition and visit different grounds is something that makes this trophy a little bit special to play in.

Difficult first game for us, White Notley have a decent record in this competition and should prove a tough challenge. As for favourites Potters Bar is correct about the two teams he has mentioned (both played in two of the last three finals) but for me Brache will be the team to look out for this season.

AWK - Thanks for this, still a bit miffed that I didn't know we could have entered, initially I thought it was another of these 'playing for playings sake' competitions however it seems fairly high profile and as you say it is a good opportunity to pit your wits against different opposition and play at new grounds, we may have even drawn you. I'll be interested to hear from Potters Bar Town who runs the competition now so I can ring him or her and at least find out when the deadline was to enter out of morbid curiosity.

John Cronk is the Secretary for the Anagram Records Trophy, I can give you his email if you want but the deadline was originally Saturday 15th July.

Because of a mix up at certain clubs this was extended for a week or so though <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/whistling.gif" alt="" />

They are 4 clubs down this season so im sure they would have loved for Kentish Town to have entered, it would have been good to see you down 61 but i think our players would have prefered to play at Hendon somehow.

Thanks, I'm sure I have his details somewhere. It would seem that I could have registerred Kentish Town for the competition right up until 22 July so that makes it all the more disappointing, Mr Cronk would have had the FA Vase draw to hand and seen we weren't in it so I'm surprised that he didn't think to ring round a few Club's incase they had overlooked entering infact I wasn't even aware of the competition. Yes AWK confirms my

feelings that we will will be the Man Utd of division 1 when stating that the The 61FC would jump at the chance of drawing us and playing at Hendon, this is clearly the view of most Club's including no doubt many in the Premier Division.
