Tonight's game

Recommended Posts

Lost 2-0 after 2 howlers from our keeper - miskicking a clearance & then completely missing his kick. MK Dons didnt have a shot otherwise and we certainly had far more efforts at goal than them.

Att 329

Keeling was impressive - especially in the first half. Good to see Charlie again. Opinel looks very solid at left back. Ross was his usual solid self as well.

Overall a positive feel to the performance and on this effort, we'll be cofortable mid table, if not higher.

One downside, I gather Stacy Long broke his toe in training today. Also, sounds like Holloway wont be ready for the start of the season.

I felt Ekoku and MacDonald linked up well at times. We looked fairly solid bar the goalie.

Ross hit the bar from a corner. At some stage in the second half, Hawkins got through went to hit a shot from an acute angle but somehow the shot ended near MacDonald back-to-goal but he couldn't quite get a hold of it.

MacDonald had a few shots, most of which were fairly comfortably saved.

In my opinion Fleet were the better side by far. as stated two massive howlers by Mott and a third when he dropped the ball and got away with it.

Opinel kept going on to many walk abouts for my liking, but he played with passion, ball control good, and fairly nippy.

Slatter played well along with most of last years signings.a couple of players who,s ID I was unsure of played well, wearing shirt numbers 4 * 8

I spent a large duration of the match uncertain of who Numbers 4, 8 and 11 were. I think Long, De Bolla, Quinn and Keeling all spent a brief period assigned to all three numbers at different points in the game...in my mind, at least.

This wasn't helped by hearing people shout "Nice one Stacy/Rob/John/Mark!" despite Stacy Long not even being on the pitch...

Anyway, eventually it became apparent Keeling was number 11. Number 4 I believe was Mark De Bolla and Number 8 was Robert Quinn. Don't quote me on that though...

Mott wasn't playing so how he could have been responsible for "howlers" is beyond me.

The keeper was a tralist from Millwall - I don't think he'll be back.

Team was:

1)Millwall Trialist

2)Hawkins

3)Opinel

4)De Bolla

5)J Smith (McCarthy)

6)R Smith

7)Slatter

8)Quinn

9)Ekoku

10)MacDonald (Anderson)

11)Keeling (Purcell)

4 was De Bolla who I thought was the best player on show. Keeper who erred was a triallist so with Holloway still not fit we will need some cover there. Overall I thought we played well, went past players and were the better side. I can only remember the two errors giving them a chance on goal whereas we must have had 8 or so attempts albeit none going in. Keeling looked good and both full backs were sound as were the Smith brothers.

We were happy to put our foot on the ball and Ekoku had plently of ball skills for a big bloke.

Plenty to be upbeat about.

I thought that last night's game/performance was very encouraging.

De Bolla took control of the midfield and looked like he and Quinn had the makings of a very solid central midfield partnership.

It was great to see Charlie back and he seems to have a target man that he can play off of. Ekoku did show some nice touches but I thought that he needed to be a bit stronger some of the time - I am sure that will come

For me, the highlight of last night was Opinel.

He has the makings of a real fan favourite. Me and my son were very taken with him, the way he walked through tackles and charged up and down the left flank was great. We have already started calling him 'The Tank' and I am looking forward to watching him this year.

He seemed to gel very well into what looks like being a strong, well organised defence.

Overall, a much better performance than most of last year and one that gives real cause for optimism.

(edited for misspelling - sorry)

Quite encouraging last night in my opinion, apart from the unfortunate keeper. Both full backs looked good, Hawkins looked like he had something to prove to his former employers. Opinel looked good and was able to cover his own mistakes, I remember one particular tackle inside our box. Both Smiths looked solid, Ross looks like a captain in the making and James seems to have grown in stature. Slatter, captain for the night, looked good playing wide as did Keeling. One thing about Keeling, a couple of times he turned down the chance to play the ball back to his fullback, in this case, Opinel, when it seemed the easier thing to do and then went on the lost the ball. I'm sure in the heat of a league game he will do what's right. DeBolla, for a striker playing in midfield looked good. When I saw him play for Grays last season he seemed to be playing without ant confidence, last night, he played with his head up and in the first half was probably man of the half. Quinn looks as if he could be the link up man in the middle, big and strong. It was good to see MacDonald back and looking sharp, I'm sure if he stays fit he'll get a hatful of goals. Ekoku looked slightly raw but that will change playing with MacDonald, he looks as if he will be difficult to knock off the ball and he can hold it up for the midfield to join in the play. As for the subs, the man with no number, was it Anderson, looked quite good and seemed to want it, half the battle I think. McCarthy brings an old head to the team but I'm not sure he'll be able to dislodge the Smiths. As for the oppo, Hastings will never score two goals like those ever again and I liked their number 8 whoever he was. Wasn't it great to be back at Stonebridge road again.

I think the keeper was a Millwall lad lent to us for the evening.

Of the new boys I thought Opinel and Debolla stood out and Ekoku was a problem for their defence all night.

Charlie and Ross were both excellent and Peter Hawkins seems to be able to play anywhere and not look out of place.

Very encouraging performance. <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/applaus.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/applaus.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/applaus.gif" alt="" />

If it was not Mott so be it, blame the annoucer as he started to read out the teams, changed his mind and read out the whole squad.
With the names not matching the numbers in the programe, well some did some did not so was highly confusing.
The chap who came on with no number at all, more confusion, if that was Anderson as previously stated he maybe worth another look. Thought he done ok for the limited amount of time he was on.
Overall for a new squad as such I was impressed,if there is a down side they had 4 chances scored two, We had loads scored none, but maybe it was just one of those nights.

No he didn't - he read out the team then the subs - at no time did he mention Motts name - don't blame others for your lack of attention.
His words were there will be so many changes tonight rather than read out the teams i will read out the whole squads I think maybe you should have paid attention not me. If you know the guy ask him, sorry will be enough for me
