I wouldnt mind seeing both the two triallist keepers snapped up but particularly Nicholls who is top drawer.

[color:"blue"]Agree about Nicholls (appears to have been Heybridge first choice for the past couple of seasons), but would Robin want to have two first choice keepers in tow (could he afford them both)? Hence my question about Charlie Mitten.
Certainly Nicholls/Chalmers-Stevens look to be a stronger pairing than Mitten/Egan last season & Trego/Hussein the season before.

Charlie was at the Millwall friendly but not on the bench. Guess Robin knows all about him already.

I thought Sknner was very impressive.

Wanted the ball.

Was like a terrier.

Did you spot some of the 'sly moves' from Skinner to keep their forwards at bay-lovely.

His skill and experience shone through-just what we need

WE have cover in Standen and abbott who can both play at full backif need be.

Lets not forget either that Dean Standen is also a very very able left midfield player

A Fisher summary

Joe Arif reports from Hartsdown Park

Margate 5

Abbot 18, 21 Hockton 29, 69 pen Pinnock 82

Fisher 2

Taylor 11, L Piper 86

Fisher Athletic kicked off their first open pre season friendly with a 5-2 defeat at the hands of a rampant Margate. A disappointing crowd of 303 witnessed an explosive opening with 4 goals coming in the first 29 minutes. Fisher started the brighter with the dangerous Damien Scannell and Charlie Taylor causing constant problems down the left flank. The pressure told as early as the 11th minute when Steve Watts leaped up between two Margate defenders to meet an Anton |Robinson cross. Nicholls in the Margate goal did fantastically well to parry the initial effort but Taylor was on hand to nod home the follow up to give Fisher the lead.

Waves of Fisher attacks continued with Watts, Griffiths and Taylor all going close. A second goal looked to be inevitable but surprisingly it was the home side that drew blood against the run of play. A harmless cross from the right by Protheroe looked to be gathered up with ease by Pullen but somehow the keeper allowed the ball to spill from his grasp for the delighted Abbot to nip in with the easiest of finishes.

Fisher obviously rattled by this again hit the self destruct button just three minutes later. The dangerous Protheroe once again caused confusion in the Fisher defence when his cross was met by a poor clearance from new signing Paul Lorraine where Abbot was on hand to drill home from 20 yards.

More misery was heaped on the away side when on 29 minutes Pullen spilled a whipped-in cross from Protheroe to the feet of Hockton who made no mistake tapping in to give Margate a two goal cushion.

An unchanged Fisher side emerged for the second half with intent. Again it was the away team starting off the brighter as in the first but the Margate back four stood firm reducing the Fisher attack to hopeful long shots that never tested the Margate keeper. On 69 minutes it was again the home side that went further in front from the spot with a well executed penalty.

On 82 minutes the rout was complete when Hockton broke free of the offside trap to fire home beyond the despairing dive of Pullen. Lenny Piper tapped in to give the score line some sort of respectability but by then the day belonged to Margate.

Fisher manager Justin Edinburgh said on the game ‘We’re obviously disappointed with this result, it was individual errors that cost us today which you can not compensate for. Once we went behind we were always chasing the game. We hate losing but lets get the mistakes out of the way now so we can carry on and start again on Monday.

Fisher team: Pullen, Clancy, Lorraine, Kitamirike, C Piper, Riviere, Robinson, Scannell, Watts, Griffiths, Taylor. Subs: Davis, L Piper, Deen, Hocking, Brackwell, Clarke

Justin Edinburgh's comments are well made.

Whilst the 'Gate did pretty good, lets not forget that it was individual errors that go us back in the game, and then in front;after which Fisher lost a bit of heart.

We can't get too carried away, and i hope that we have not used up all the luck in a friendly game.

Would add my voice to the comments thatNicholls looked excellent in goal-hope he is signed up urgent

Only saw the last 40 minutes as working til late, but what I saw I was impressed with.

The passing game was good and pleased to see players running into space to receive passes. Players covering for each other at the back. Also in the move that lead to the penalty Pinnock rode a tackle and stayed on his feet without doing a "Ronaldo".
