Hornchurch 3--2 Slough Town

It saddens me to say it but the very best we can hope for this season now is mid-table.Anyone who thinks we can still get promotion has no idea what a good football team looks like.Supposedly nearly all the players were fit and we had an abundance of riches to pick from, which suggests to me three things-the management can't motivate players-the players are just not good enough-and/or they have no desire to win for Slough.I will still be supporting them every game, but of course the games from now on are on are only friendlies and meaningless.

Outplayed and outclassed I am sad to say. A very poor performance, and the scoreline flattered us. As the season has gone on, far from improving, we are getting worse. I too think that a highish mid table position is where we are heading for. Though we put in some good home performances, we just arn't up for it away from home--at times we are embarrasingly bad. Who to blame? Well any manager that promises promotion, but then gets relegated, and who then spends the next two years slowly pushing us lower and lower, is a good place to start. Each year under his management we finish lower than the previous year.

This is getting beyond a joke. I can't understand why, with a squad as talented as we have, we keep falling behind in the league year after year and end up mid-table. OK so Hornchurch are flying high but if we have title aspirations we should be beating them, beating Wealdstone, etc. Don't the players want promotion? All these hopes of winning our games in hand probably won't come true either and even if we do I can't see us catching Wealdstone and Northwood.

lets have a look at the Christmas fixtures:

17/12 --- Slough Town - - - Wealdstone

21/12 --- Slough Town - - - Leyton Pennant

26/12 --- Yeading - - - Slough Town

28/12 --- Slough Town - - - Marlow

01/01 --- Slough Town - - - East Thurrock United

04/01 --- Northwood - - - Slough Town

we have four home games and theoretically a great chance to get 9 points and if we can beat Wealdstone as well, 12. Then Northwood away, and depending how we've done before that, we can judge how well we may do.

But this Christmas period, with 3 distinctly winnable games and another we can't really afford to lose, will tell us if we have any chance or whether we will just fall apart and lose against other mid-tablers. I feel that there's no reason why the team can't get 15 points from these games, they just need to want it.

I will always admit when we play bad and today was bad . Palmer was our only defender , Wilko our only midfielder . Nothing up front until Sammy came on . I agree with Matt about the talent we have , but we can't keep blaming Steve Browne whether you like him or not , we've shown often enough that we can play well . Underacheivement is what I call it .

Good athorative Ref we had today with that arrogant Steve Jones yelling at him for 90 minutes and their keeper continually time wasting and getting away with it . The ref kept stopping his watch and only played 1 extra minute !! As if it would a made a difference anyway !

Wayne--Surely if the players underachieve, it is the managers fault--he chose them, he chooses the tictacs, he motivates them. I agree that calling for him to go may be pointless, but that doesn't mean he isn't responsible.

Don't get me wrong Ted , you are spot on and I like others , not a Steve Browne fan , but all you said has been happening for a long time now but the team still has shown they can play well besides who the manager is . Obviously a different manager would enhance that talent consistently , but I just find it frustrating , that's all .

Not a very good performance today, agree with you Wayne, Palmer and Wilko were our best players today, too many players having an off day.Browne has to take some of the flak, its a managers job to motivate his players,if they're getting none from him how does he expect them to play well, agree players do under achieve, but in the end its down to the manager to make them understand that. C'mon u Rebels

I wish I could agree that we lost to a good team - the loss would not be so painful if that were true. But the fact of the matter is that we lost to a team that was inept in many departments - particularly their midfield which was as clueless as ours. The difference between the teams was the quality of the finish for their first two goals - the first clinical, the second spectacular. We never looked capable of matching either, and were somewhat fortunate to get that penalty.

As pointed out by many on this forum, we rarely play well away from home and we rarely play well on a poor pitch - and there are two many of these left this season for us to even figure in the promotion race.

There were some good performances - Barrowcliff as always gave 100% and Palmer's surges upfield helped to compensate for the absent midfield. I thought Tony Boot had one of his better games and was surprised to see him give way to Winston instead of the ineffective Davies. As for Gilkes - someone said he was back in the team today - but I think they must have been mistaken !

Hopefully spirits can be raised by taking 3 points at home to Wealdstone on Tuesday, but it is difficult to envisage us winning another match away from home all season based on the recent showings.

Never mind - we've got the best manager in the league - probably the best in the country - what more could we want ????

One question for any Hornchurch reader on the forum - what had we done to upset Mr Jones ? I know he was shut out of the first match of the season (by Steve Daly) but I don't recall any ill feeling. Is he always that obnoxious or was is something about Slough ? It would have been good to see him put in his place, but we were never going to do it with our football, and the referee looked incapable of discipling a 5 year old let alone an experienced pro.

Steve Jones aside, everything else about the setup at Hornchurch was impressive - noisy enthusiastic support, an efficient snack-bar that serves beer as well (ok - only cans but still a surprise), the place looking more like a holiday camp than the dilapidated athletics stadium it used to be, £5 admission with the program thrown in. If we don't go up, I would not be upset to see Hornchurch get one of the promotion places.

well, we think that we're a good team and that's all that matters, you underestimated us.... look at our results...anyway..I still think that you will be in the shake up at the end of the season..lots of goals in your quick running side...you'll be there...be patient. As for Jonesy...you surprise me with your comments...he's one of the hardest working strikers in football at any level...yeah..sure..he's at the ref and the opposition players all the time, but he knows what he's doing and why he's doing it...all the talk about Jonsey's wages is nonsence...steve has his own very suucessful business and plays cos he loves the game, sure we pay him well, but you've got players earning more than him I'm told... and where were they yesterday???..... Stevie was a class act and also bear in mind the stick he gets from defenders...you should have seen his legs last night...black and blue...its all part of the game and he knows that too, he is a real pro...brilliant...and everywhere he plays the fans all love him...you should have heard the reception he got from the Southend United fans last tuesday...awesome....by the way...whoever wrote the match report on your home page obviously wasn't at the game...Adam Locke scored the first goal....the penalty was a joke and even you must know that (I know, some you win some you lose...but never kid ourselves..just larf and take the penalty) and Crippsy was never offside in a million years, the ball came back off the post...how could he be???..as for the ''bobbly pitch that suited us more than you''

ha ha ha...sour grapes old chap...anyway...thanks for the compliment re; the ground...we've worked bloody hard this year to get the old place looking good and there's a new 1200 seater going up at the end of the season which'll look even better, lets hope that you are visiting again...for a premier league fixture!!!...well done...keep your chins up and shaft the ghastly camels on tuesday and we'll owe you one...cheers

You should be glad I was at the ground to watch it given the attendance was so low!

OK, so I got some facts wrong, big deal. They're easily changed.

Also, having seen the third goal thanks to Rob's video on the Urchins site, it does prove that Cripps was onside. I was only going on what I was told for that one as from down the other end, it did look it and we did get collared badly last week with an offside goal.

The pitch. It was bobbly, and a continual punt up the pitch into the channels was often your tactic for the game, but the main thing is, it worked and it worked well. Steve Jones is a good target and was supported quickly.

The penalty. It was dubious yes, but Spencer was sandwiched in between the two making the challenge. Harsh on the defenders, but as you say, some would have, some wouldn't.

there are no excuses, you got it all wrong....do better next time!!!...... and don't be such a grouch about the attendance, we had the biggest in the league and you guys helped so well done..... gates are always lower in the week before chrissie, I know you are disappointed but you don't need to be making cheap cracks...you also have to admit that the atmosphere was great...anyway...we'll see what the average attendances are at the end of the year and we'll also see who goes up or down...(with us) ha ha ha.......as for your team...they are good......no question..they'll bounce back..as for our tactics...our manager got it right and took your two dangerous wingers out of the game...brilliant...made me little heart skip a beat when I saw the team sheet...anyway..well done all of you.....cheer up...merry xmas and good luck..

I still believe that we have what it takes to get promoted.

I know some people were not impressed by Hornchurch, but they so badly wanted the match and in the conditions it was never going to be a great game of football. I personally think Hornchurch will go up.

The Wealdstone game on Tuesday is now a massive game and after Saturday and if every Slough Town player who goes on that pitch is not well-up for that match then I will be very disappointed.

At the moment too many players are lacking confidence. Byron and Booty look shadows of their former selves at the moment. We also need a settled team as lately the side seems to be chopped and changed every five minutes. Look at the early part of the season the team never changed and we were winning matches - so we should keep to a set of players. If the team keeps on getting changes how is the side ment to gell?

I still believe that we will be there because apart from 5 or so teams in this division many sides are fairly average in my opinion. Get a settled side - get Daly and Sammy back in the starting X1 and win those games in hand!

Come on Slough!

wot do you think that Mr Steve Browne will motivate the players?

do you think that Mr martyn Deaner will find a new ground or develop the old?

Do you think that Mr Martyn Deaner will make a success of Slough?, contrary to anything he has achieved at previous clubs?
