Law 3 - Maximum number of substitutes

Recommended Posts

In all other matches, a greater number of substitutes may be used provided that:

the teams concerned reach agreement on a maximum number;

the referee is informed before the match.

If the referee is not informed, or if no agreement is reached before the match, no more than six substitutes are allowed.

I guess someone forgot to inform the ref; you know what these little Hitlers are like! <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" />

"..other things on his mind..."?

What? Were Carlisle playing Auchtermuctie U16s in a psf that evening then?

Perhaps the form with the team-sheet that he takes from the manager to the referee one hour before kick-off could be ammended with a box to be ticked whether the 'FIFA 6', or the 'psf 44' substitutes are to be used. That shouldn't be over-taxing for the match officials. I suggest that a small but perfectly formed sub-committee should be appointed by the Board to discuss and consider the nature of the alteration to the form or whether an alternative solution might be found.

Wait! The penny has just dropped. Callum! The new arrival. A boy, presumably. [A little brother for Phoebe?] Good wishes to the three of them from me. The c0ck-up with the form thing was probably due to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Hertsblue probably gets a couple of years or more paternity leave as a member of Blair's Inner Sanctum so he should recover his composure for the real thing in a few weeks time.

But when do they have to 'agree', Webbo? In what form is their agreement confirmed with each other? And how is that form of agreement confirmed to the referee? And when?

You can now begin to understand why these people are paid £50,000 a year, mate. To you and I, it doesn't appear very difficult, does it? You knock on the dressing room door 70 minutes before kick-off, get the team-sheet from the manager, walk 8 yards to the referee's room and hand it over. Seems straightforward enough to me. Hardly worth a prawn sandwich, let alone 50 grand a year.

If it was that simple, everyone would be after the job. Highly complex, Webbo. Years of experience are required. Apprenticeship, 3 yeras of evening classes, a two-year full-time course, three residential refresher courses each season, and only then does someone begin to understand the vagaries of the task.

Phew!
