Were we last season? I don't remember much hype. There was a lot of talk about going professional and some mention of the play-offs when we rose higher in the table, but nobody seriously 'expected' much more than in any previous season as far as I can recall.

I'd've said there was more expectation the season before with Roy, Moussa, Protheroe, etc, on the back of their unbeaten run in 2004.

Why all the fuss about bloody Charlton, in the old days we used to play Arsenal, Tottenham, West Ham etc etc every close season !

What period did that happen every close season then R.R.?

I remember one season circa 1990 when we played an Arsenal side in a testimonial followed by West Ham reserves and Tottenham schoolboys but that was a one off.

Moi ? Ranting ? I think not my lord.

As the great FF said, when he was just plain SD......this is a forum for disussion......so, I am just adding my comments to your comments. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, it's just that mine and yours seldom agree. But there you go....let's enjoy it while we can a ? who knows how long we can continue to enjoy the limited freedom of speech that we have nowadays !

You be as negative as you like me ol' son, but don't get the right raging if I dare to disagree.

Cheers,

Not sure whether I have been filled with pessimism over the forthcoming season, any negative thoughts are a hangover from the last torrid year.
Then, our expectations were not that high. We were in transition with both FT and PT players, we had a new manager, and split training routines.
This year, without being negative, we simply have to progress.
LD has (or will have) his own team. They will be all full time. They will be as fit as he wants them, and play his own brand of football.
The excuse that they are not all his team or that training had to be arranged around the part-timers no longer counts.
I am not unhappy with the players he has brought in, but I am concerned that he is leaving it a little late to get his squad finalised before the league campaign.
What I would say is this does appear to be a critical year for Fleet. Another poor on field year will leave dwindling crowds and cash shortages, which will make the ground move that much more difficult.
A greatly improved showing, (particularly if we can get a good cup run + some high profile publicity)will hopefully return the crowds to the 1400+ they were 2 years ago.

It was 1990 actually. But don’t start rembering these bygone years otherwise we will have little Lionel (sorry Riverview Red) back going on about these halcyon times when we were the best team in the world, the sun never set on the empire and the two Ron’s were Roning it up large!!!!!!!

Indeed - anyone who believed any speculative comments from last season from club staff, players or officials that we had a chance of sneaking into the play-offs must have been pretty naive.
