It will be sad to see Wilko leave (IF he does) - as I think he's one of our most important players and he certainly has no right to win half the headers that he does (often against taller opponents)

Not sure where we're going really....Abbott in - Wilko out?

Doesn't make sense to me, especially given recent posts on here regarding Craig's commitment to the club and each game and Gary's age....?

Still, Andy knows what he's doing....I hope.

If you read the news item again, you will see that it's not Andy's doing, it's Craig who has asked to leave the club not the other way round.

I guess its out of Andy's hands if Wilko wants to leave but his obviously a useful player to have around given the fact he can play both up-front and at the back equally well plus he has good battling qualities.

The aquisition of Budge should add some much needed firepower to the frontline but still "a little worried" about the backline.

How come we can afford a fee for a striker but not for a defender? aka Tim Cole. At least with Tim you know what you are getting and know he can do the business at this level.

(This isn't a criticism of Andy its more just a general query!)

With the absence of Duku for potentially the rest of the season I see this as a BIG problem area. Loan signings are ok i.e. Chris Giles may offer a "quick fix" but as Wilkerson points out in this weeks Reporter, you need stability at the back and its just something you don't get with loan signings unless their loan period is extended beyond a month:

"The defence has also been reshuffled a few times and it doesn't help me react to a situation because you get use to people's patterns of play"

Wilkerson on Fleet's Defence this season, Reporter, 12/12/02

On a separate subject I find it frustrating to read time and again that we are unable to compete with clubs like Canvey and Grays (no disrespect to them intended) in the transfer market. After all, our crowds are twice the size of Canvey this season and probably something like 5 times the size of Grays -why can we not compete in terms of salary and pay?

I realise we have to pay the wages of injured players on the sidelines and have 19 contracted players etc but its still frustrating to read that clubs like the Canvey's and Grays can outbid us when a quality player becomes available. This must make Andy's job very hard.

It's a question of degree, I know that Dagenham have already turned down £8,500 for Tim.

We are getting the stability with players back from injury, in fact it is only Francis and Paul Sturgess out injured at the moment. The current problem is suspensions. On Saturday Matt Lee, Aaron Barnett, and Nick Burton are all out, and Aaron is out for a further 2 matches after that. With Craig possibly going, (and not happy playing at the back) we need some cover without having to take on a player's wages for the rest of the season.

Both Grays and Canvey have multi-millionaire chairmen who are prepared to pour their own money into the clubs. Unless Brian wins the lottery, we have to rely on the "normal sources"

Fair enough Dave.

I knew Mr King had a "few quid" to play with but never realised he was a "multi-millionaire". That makes the achievements of last season all the more impressive.

Why are all the millionaire chairmen from Essex? Perhaps Brian should relocate!

I accept your point about the stability of the defence but still feel we lack the "presence" of Mr Duku. A lot of the other Conference teams do have a 7 foot monstor in their rearguard and thats something we don't have. Tim Cole was quite commanding in the area but as you say his out of our price range!

That said, I'm not doubting the ability of Burton and Barnett. I think Burton in particular has shown what a quality defender he is in the absense of Duku. Last season, Duku naturally got all the adolation!

I didn't mis-read the article, I just may have made it sound like that...?!

I was merely querying the whole situation.

I know Wilko's desire to leave is his own decision (possibly as a result of playing at the back?) and I realise that although Abbott was top draw (time will only tell if he still is) I'm just concerned at his age now (discriminatory I know but there y'go)

Just thought that I can't blame Craig really. He isn't that old and he's reliable in various positions......player of the year just 18 months ago let's not forget!

I hope that he doesn't feel that Andy has taken the p*** out of him....as he probably wants to play up front, regularly but given the current situation, especially with both Che & Liam out, Hamid, Booth and Parker gone and Abbott on his tod up there, I would've thought that now is a great time to play him up front again.....

Some good news at last.

Just spoken to my mate who plays for Heybridge and he really rates Budge. Said he holds the ball up well, has an excellent first touch, and makes a habit of scoring spectacular goals. I'll settle for a few tap ins.

Looks like another good signing by Andy.

We've met Kevin before, he scored Heybridge' only goal in our 2-1 victory away to them last season.

According to their match report Abrahams scored their goal but Kevin came close on a couple of occasions.
