Upminster Tudors were formed in 1548 by Henry V111 to keep his Hornchurch based Yeomanry occupied during times of peace. They played regular games against 'Ricay Tars' from the Billericay area which was in those days of course the Tudor naval docks, 'Ricay Tars' were formed 5 days after 'Upminster Tudors'. It is believed that the 'Ricay Tars' ground was sited somewhere near Waitrose in Billericay and that the 'Tudors' played on a site near Tesco in Hornchurch. Historians believe that those early sites now explain why supermarkets are so interested in NL football grounds.

Elizabeth the 1st had no interest in the miltary playing football matches after she succeeded Henry to the throne so her lover Sir Walter Raleigh became their patron (Chairman of the Tudors) whilst another suitor The Earl Of Buckingham took over the reigns at 'Ricay Tars'.

Through various successions to the throne of England the names of both clubs were changed several times until the present day clubs were established from those early institutions. There is no doubt that those two clubs share the title of 'oldest club in England' and in fact a little known but very rare document from those times exists and is kept in the town hall in Billericay. It mentions a match between the two sides on the 29 July 1625 in which each side score 19 goals and three 'Tars' and one 'Tudor' were killed during a goal mouth scuffle. <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Blimey I go back firther than that UU

Didn't William the Corn Curer bring a Continental Team over and play against the team in Kent known as Battle United. That's why it was called football because he cured corns.

I seem to remember that they played uphill in the first half, hence the phrase when they were up they were up or was that attributed to York City.
