Best midfield

When all fit we have a choice of:

Gilkes, B Bubb, A Bubb, James, Wilko, Spencer, Metcalfe, Rainford and Williams.

Who would your four be? I would say Gilkesy and B Bubb pick themselves, but i'd go for Metcalfe and Spencer in the centre. I'm actually a bit disappointed that Mets has no started recently actually.

I thought Dave Rainford showed some good touches on Saturday and made a really good contribution to midfield. I hope he continues to play there and is not continuously moved into positions where he does not play so well, as when he was here before.

Gilkes is brilliant when he plays, but is his ability to avoid injury somewhat suspect? I think we need some consistency in midfield now that Veli has gone.

Agree with Gilkes and Byron with Alvin to come on later in the game for Gilkes when his old man legs get tired!!

In the middle I would go for Rainford and Metcalf. Rainford seems to have lost this glamour pass every time attitude he had where every ball had to be the decisive one or the long 50 yard accuracy pass which often cost us possession. What I saw of him on Saturday, he was playing much more intelligently.

Spencer is still to convince me he's worth the place. He scored a fantastic goal the other week, but I feel his physical presence or lack of, concerns me when he plays in the middle. Not convinced by his, or Rainfords, tackling ability either as yet.

Best thing is though, it's a damn fine selection to choose from for this level!

Everyone seems to be forgetting about Wilkinson . He's the type of player you don't notice until he's not playing . This showed Saturday when was pushed back into the middle after Palmer and Sammy came on . Those 2 did make a difference , but so did Darron . He brought the midfield together superbly . Gilkes has to be on the left and Bubb on the right WHEN HE RUNS AROUND THE DEFENDERS NOT THRU' THEM !! Undecided on either Metcalfe or Rainford for the 2nd central position . Both can do the Job . Spencer is a bit off colour for me at the mo .

Gilkes, Rainford, Williams, Bubb. B

Tough choice. In my opinion Rainford, Bubb. B and Gilkes pick themselves (Rainford gave us something on Saturday that we haven't had for a while. He has bite and he also gets up and down the pitch. He can be a bit greedy at times but if one or two go in it's well worth it). For me I've gone on current form for the fourth spot. As a big Spencer fan it is difficult to leave him out but Williams does look very good. At the start of the season, Metcalfe would have been an automatic pick for me but since his suspension he hasn't looked as good. The point to make is that we are likely to always be missing at least one, maybe two or three of those top eight (not including the man with no direction (CJ)) at any time so choice is often dictated by that. Do agree that whoever is picked that is a cracking midfield squad.

Along with Veli I think Byron is probably the best young talent we've had here since the likes of Owusu. He's definitely class. Our midfield, on its day, can definitely be the best in this league.
