i have come across refs that have given some shocking decisions, but when u speak to them about it later on in the game, they say "ok i may have got it worng" fair play, i can handle that! its when u question it without shouting or swearing and r told "shut up and go away" if someone said that to u in the street they would get a punch, so y say it on the pitch? coz they know if we hit em, our careers r finished!

I agree with this completely. There have been times when I have captained our side and when doing the toss before the game the ref has said if you approach me in a reasonable manner I will talk to you. Not many actually do! In one incedence the said ref gave a dodgy penalty and I approached him not shoutin & not swearin and simply asked what he had given it for. He then shouts in my face go away, go away, go away! How are you supposed to communicate with people like that? All that did was wind me up and make the situation a whole lot worse! Why is it that some refs think that because they're on the pitch they can talk/treat you like you're a 10year old!?!?

Here is my view on things. I referee at a level that I have played at (only a little) and watched for 20 years. I know how the game is played at that level and understand the players so I hope that I referee and line quite well. If you apply that at the top level then we need ex professionals refereeing. Why dont they because they know the abuse the refs get and are not big enough to take it.

 

I know some good refs who have given up because of the abuse. The more abuse the players give out the more refs will pack up and you will get referees officiating at a level they are no good at. That is fact.

 

You guys play at a certain level but expect referees to be of a premiership level and not at the level you are playing at. When a player calls me [****!!****] I will usually respond with "Why do you think I am doing this game" Refs make mistakes but players make more.

 

Stop cheating. this includes appealing for throws that you know damn well isn't yours. When the ref gives a decision dont abuse them. If one of your players makes a mistake you dont rush up to him sitck your face in his and abuse him. Why do it with a ref then.

 

Just some points from me and I look forward to the questions that will follow and I will endeavour to answer them !

Kroons, I now think I am paranoid.....i cant remember ignoring you neither can I remember you giving a penalty against me but all the rest seems to fit nicely. I am now thinking that I could have been drunk, or at least hungover, on either one of these occasions!!!!

 

I have two big issues with referees at this level; first, as people have mentioned before, is not being able to talk to them. Maybe players have brought this about themselves and instantly referees think that, as soon as a player approaches them, they are going to get a volley of abuse. However, it is the only level I have played at where you cannot talk to 99% of referees, even including the Ryman 3 days (which is an equivalent level)........I would also comment that the 'chat' to referees is no better at different levels but the way the referees deal with it takes a lot of the sting out of the situation. It is all about managing the situation before frustrations kick in and it gets out of hand.

 

The second swearing issue that has suddenly arrisen and referees have got hot on. I think this is the big area where it is obvious that a lot of referees havent played the game. I DO NOT agree with swearing directly at the referee or abusing him in anyway but they have to also realise the frustrations when playing football and that swearing always has been used and always will be used within a game.

 

The only question I would ask and have needed to understand for ages is; is it possible, and known to have happened, that referees at this level can be demoted a level? In the past, although it could happen on paper, we all know that this wasnt the case. In fact, I have known clubs to deliberately mark up a 'crap' referee to get them out of the league to ensure that he doesnt referee them again.

J.G. interesting to note it has taken you 4 years to reply to Krooner's remarks.The posts in those days were similar to todays,nothing has changed.I think honesty has a lot to do with it,players are encouraged to shout for everything even when they know it's not theirs.Sorry to say if you want promotion,your chances are increased by becoming an OfficialsWhinger. Mr Wells,Mr Barnett,Mr Ingram,in my opinion showed how a good Referee should act,by talking to the Players in a firm but Polite manner,not going straight for the pocket,this gains them the Respect of the Players,so lessening the degree of abuse given.Using my scenario,Guildford City will walk the Premier their Players are drilled to a Tee,in the appealing stakes,but if you play at a vast Stadium like the Spectrum suppose most goes unoticed,N.G.U. were great whingers last year,done them no harm.Some great posts back in 2006,I liked the one about a REFS STRIKE,could that ever happen?

It appeared again on here again with a response this morning so I thought I would add to the subject and see what was said.

 

I have had many a conversation with Kroons on this subject and we never see eye to eye and I was wondering what his view was as things 'seem' to be getting worse (both from players and how refs react). The last question is more what I was after a response from.
