Wayne Rooney has been given the all clear to play in the World Cup, FIFA has confirmed, after a scan showed how well his broken right foot is healing. The good news comes as the footballer flies back to Germany by private jet, with England's hopes resting on his shoulders.

He appeared to be smiling as he left hospital earlier, following the results of the scan on his metatarsal bone.

Davies' big grin

And FA official David Davies walked out behind him, giving a huge grin to waiting reporters and photographers.

But both Rooney and Davies were swept away from the hospital by a waiting car without saying a word.

The 20-year-old star had arrived back in the UK this morning on a private jet from England's training camp in Baden Baden, Germany.

In training this week

Fans had already breathed a sigh of relief this week when pictures appeared of Rooney in training, executing an impressive scissor-kick and blasting a ball into a net.

He was also photographed running on the spot, dribbling and volleying the ball into the net.

Following the pictures, England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson said he looked "very good."

England's opening Group B game is against Paraguay on Saturday.

But Rooney is not expected to play until later stages to give him time to regain match fitness.

I refer to the statement from Sir Alex soon after the alleged break. He was upbeat and said it wasn't as bad as first thought. Then came a statement saying it was not a break but a hair line fracture. Speaking to a number of Doctors i pick up at the Q.E.Q.M they said a small hairline could be more difficult than a break. BUT, if Rooney was lucky/ a good healer and got constant attention from physios etc, it should heal quickly. Lets all hope and pray it holds up.

Rooney's Up For The Cup

Updated: 11:34, Thursday June 08, 2006

Wayne Rooney's injured foot is now fully healed and the star striker will play his part in England's World Cup campaign.

The message that all England fans wanted to hear was delivered by coach Sven-Goran Eriksson at the team's training camp in Germany.

He was speaking after Rooney trained with his team-mates at their headquarters in Baden-Baden.

The omens were good when the 20-year-old flew back to Germany after a scan on his broken metatarsal in Manchester yesterday afternoon.

The Manchester United striker will probably miss England's first three World Cup games - but looks set to make the knockout stages.

He is now certain to be named in coach Sven-Goran Eriksson's final 23-man squad on Friday.

After the scan his club said in a statement: "Wayne is now in the care of the England medical team.

"The expert independent medical view is that he has a good chance of being fit after the group stage.

"At that point, the expert independent medical view is that his participation in the tournament will require very careful assessment in order to address his suitability."

The talismanic hitman was injured playing in the Premiership against Chelsea nearly six weeks ago.

Eriksson must confirm his final squad by 1400 BST tomorrow, 24 hours before England's opener against Paraguay.

The nation's hopes were raised this week by pictures of Rooney during training - keeping up the ball, running hard on the spot and volleying.

Before the scan Eriksson said his fitness looked "very good" and he was "300 percent" confident of being able to play.

The tournament kicks off at 4pm on Friday when hosts Germany take on Costa Rica.

England are second favourites after Brazil to lift the World Cup trophy for only the second time. They last won it in 1966.
