Pre-Season Friendlies: I'm not sure I get the point

Recommended Posts

I'm never sure that I understand what clubs get out of them. Some seek to travel miles for fairly pointless games, which must be an expensive way of team bonding & is likely to hack off those who can't go or have partners and kids [especially if they don't like football]. Others seek to play teams of a lower standard in the hope of gaining confidence by scoring hatfuls of goals without testing their defences, while others seek to play sides above them and invariably get stuffed without their forwards getting a sniff.

Beyond revenue from playing prestigeous games, and everybody can't do that all of the time, what's it all about?

We should get some of the fake Spurs fans along. Hopefully they will like what they see and they may decide that they would actually prefer to become a real footy fan of their true local side. On the other hand some of the true Tottenham fans may also take more of an interest and may return. It's not as if they have fixtures that clash with Town very often.

I wholeheartedly agree with your sentiments regarding the concept of friendlies. It just isn't the same is it when there is simply nothing at stake?

The freindly matches sometimes do more to damage the reputation and standing of the smaller, host club. When we (York City) played Man United in a pre-season friendly the ground was packed with York parents deluding their kids that they were seeing a real game of football involvoing a genuine Manchester United side. I'm sure most of the locally based Manchester Unietd fans never returned.

I think the Barnet game will be the most interesting of all Town's pre-season fixtures but I doubt we'll be able to create any real feeling of a local derby that means anything.

Can't get excited about any rivalry between Twon and Barnet. They are no longer our rivals and I certainly don't hate them now. There is a gulf of difference between our two clubs. Personally, I view EFC as our real rivals and each win for either club will give big bragging rights. the Spurs game will be different as they may bring some reserves who are on the fringe of the first team.

ok so if you dont have pre season friendlies, how do players reach any kind of match fitness? or the coaching try and start to knit a new team together?

I agree that players need games pre season, but what's the point of playing games you can't win or can't lose. Or are hundreds of miles away? I don't get it!

Ah, but that's the whole point, make money as the Home club by getting a team along with a decent travelling support...
