Think about it; Premiership clubs can command prices of £25-£50 for their games for two reasons. One is entertainment value and two is that if you don't go, someone else will (in most cases). The lower down the leagues you go, the less this applies. I don't think Southend were charging more than £15 last year and yet some of the football they played was reportadly brilliant, but it was the league they played in.

We may be able to justify £11.50 for a Conference match to ourselves and to other football fans, but to any neutrals, it's far too much. The Conference is the fifth tear of English football, but the prices don't drop as much as the entertainment levels do.

Now in the RLN we are seven levels below the Premiership. We share that mantle with about sixty other teams. The quality will be poor and the entrance fees should match it.

But as I say, that's not realistic, so I'm behind the £8 cost for the time being.


Case in point; I asked my dad last night how much he thinks we're charging for next season.

"Three quid? ...Should be free at that level."
"Add a fiver to that."
"You're joking. Someone's taking the piss."

Whilst I don't necessarily agree that it should be free, or that 'someone is taking the piss', I do believe that this would be the view of most people on Canvey. Would be the view of most, but most people don't even know we exist.

I obviously explained to him that we need to charge an entance fee just so we can pay basic ground maintenance and whatnot, but he wasn't convinced.

What we need to do is convince people like my dad that coming to watch Canvey play can be worthwhile. We can only hope that we get off to a good start, because if we don't, I think we may struggle with attendances.


And yes, I am now looking forward to next season, I just don't feel the need to say so, or be overly positive in every post. Some of you might think that I'm being negative a lot of the time, but I'm just saying things the way they are. I'm realistic, if anything.

I think the way of acting upon that is if you're a regular Canvey fan and you know anyone with that kind of mentality towards the Club the best thing to do is invite them to a game. Say you'll pay the entrace fee for them if they'll buy the beer and treat them to a game. If they enjoy it, their view may steadily change.

I don't think that'd conivnce my dad anyway. I don't think he'd want to watch us if it were free... unless we were having some success or publicity. The only games he's been to before are Brighton, Southend and Northampton. Maybe a couple of others... the Thurrock 4-3, for instance.

So there you go, success will draw the crowds.

we had 700 plus for our game against romford and they only bought down around 100 so you should get at least that against us,i would hope we get 1000 plus against you guys at the bridge as long as the game is publicised well,when we was in conf south all our games were advertised on sky but since then they are just advertised in the local press and some games had been advertised in shops around time,so therefore making people aware there is a game is a priority to get more punters in.A few times this season people asked me what shirt i was wearing and when told would reply "i didn't even think there was a hornchurch football club anymore" or others would say they didn't know there was a game on

THIS WAS the game that everyone had been thinking and talking about ever since the fixtures were published in early August but it didn’t in any way measure up to what any loyal Boro supporter had hoped for. In front of the largest home crowd at Fords of 416 the home team won the toss and decided to play against the strongish end to end wind in the first half. Romford took the game to their visitors for the first few minutes and won two free kicks one after the other but they were both cleared safely by the visiting defence. This flurry of activity was followed by a long period of Urchin pressure which was dealt efficiently by the Boro defence or by their ‘keeper behind them when needed.

 

For this reason the Hornchurch attacks on goal were mainly restricted to long shots which either went high and wide or were safely collected by Neil Finn. However, there were a few dangerous moments in the home penalty area mid-way through the first half. Firstly when Danny Cowley just missed with a hard shot, then when Micky Rogan cleared for an Urchin corner and just after this the visitors’ number 11 Luke Longman hit the ball wide when receiving a free kick delivered from the half way line. Steve King also managed to miss one of his usual dangerous headers on goal from a corner. It was during one of the Hornchurch long ball attacks after 30 minutes of play that centre back Matt Frew unluckily sliced a bouncing ball which could have gone anywhere but, instead, looped over his advancing goalkeeper and in one bounce looped gently into the Boro net. The home crowd held their collective breath and looked on in horror while this was happening and the Hornchurch squad celebrated as though they themselves had scored the best goal of the season.

 

After this shock the visitors continued to enjoy the best of the play while the Boro were unable to get close enough to the Urchins goal to cause their defenders any worry as the home attacks usually fizzled out somewhere between half way and the visiting penalty area due to passing over elaboration which was quickly dealt with by the Hornchurch mid field or were cancelled out by many inexplicable free kick decisions against them throughout the game. The half time whistle came with Hornchurch just holding their one goal lead.

 

At the restart Romford took the ball into the visiting half and were unlucky when a Des Gallen free kick on the left was passed to George Alder whose strong shot unfortunately hit Gavin Penny on its way to goal and was diverted for a harmless goal kick then just after a Scott Lovett corner from the right was met by Penny but hit wide. A third of the way through the second half a long James Gammons throw from the right was headed out as far as Danny Church who was lurking just outside the area but his shot failed to make the target and then a Penny cross was headed into the Urchin keeper’s hands by Gallen.

 

Craig Thomas replaced Gavin Penny on 66 minutes which led to a home team rorganisation and it seemed at this time that it would be just a matter of time before the Boro got their equalizing goal with all the pressure they were putting on the Hornchurch defence. But on 70 minutes during one of the visitors’ few second half attacks their number 10 Danny Heale was deemed by the referee to have been unfairly felled in the penalty area by Ben Tolley. This was a very controversial decision as most home supporters at least felt that the ball (which ended up at the far pitch fence) had been caught before the player. In front of a stunned crowd the Urchins number 11 Luke Longman ran up and hit the ball under a diving Neil Finn.

 

This was followed by the miss of the match when the visitors managed to put a cross from Danny Cowley over the crossbar from just two yards out. On 86 minutes the Boro keeper made one of his statutory point blank saves from Danny Heale which led to a corner which Matt Frew headed to safety. Just after this Andy Hall replaced Frew but a further reorganized Romford team failed, despite all their efforts, to pull a goal back and this disappointing game for all the home supporters came to an end just after a free kick from the visitors had been cleared by the Boro defence.

Got to side with Zody for once here R. I got in the ground at around 2.58 and we had a bloke with a clicker-counter thingy and he said then there was just over 400...Looked a few more, but as Z said..kids were not counted...

Mind you looked a lot more than 700 at your place for the league game....
