Historical question

Just spotted something interesting in the course of my historical duties so here's a question for you....

What do you think is the record (in years) for the longest gap between Margate winning FA Cup ties ? - ie we won won in whatever year but didn't win another one until whenever.

The actual record is just a few days shy of being exactly a certain number of years.

Also if anybody's bored go to the On This Day page and click the random player profile button there 11 times (or more if the same player appears more than once or you're waiting for a keeper) to see what random historical X1 you can come up with.

Just tried and came up with the following 4-4-2, ended up with subs as I had to wait for a keeper to pop up...

GK Scott Ward

RB Darren Annon

LB Brian Hassall

CB Andy Jackson

CB Dean Beckwith

RW Richard Hemmings

LW Les Strowger

CM Eseyas Yhdego

CM Eric German

ST Peter Beadle

ST Bobby Harrison

Subs: Adrian Collis & ? Downer

I'm guessing a war had something to do with your FA Cup teaser. Nine years?

As for the team, mine was:

Goalie - Robert Brown

Full backs - Robbie Summers and Jamie Winch

Centre backs - Ricky Pearson, Fred Alexander and George Shaw.

Midfield - Brian Webb, Dave Lee and A. Miles.

Forwards - Paul Sykes and Nicky Forster.

(and that's the first 11 that came out)

Assuming we are talking FA Cup proper then the answer is 29 years, 11 months and 17 days.

2nd Round against Walton & Hersham 9-12-1972 we won 1-0 Brown the scorer

then

26-11-2002 Leyton Orient Keister penalty 1-0 at the crabble

next longest is 20 years 11 months and 3 days from 14/12/35 when we beat Palace 3-1, to 17/11/1956 beating Dunstable town 3-1

Sorry dtm1977, the question was about any FA Cup ties, not those in the 'proper' competition.

Anyway, the period I had in mind when I posted was just shy of 8 years from winning 2-0 at Sittingbourne on 24.9.21 to winning 2-0 at Foots Cray on 21.9.29.

BUT I then realised there was an even bigger gap between wins - getting on for 12 years from 14.12.35 (beat Crystal Palace) to 20.9.47 (beat Chatham).

Wonder what the national record is ? Wouldn't have thought there'd be that many clubs who went so long without winning a cup tie for whatever reason.
