My verdict - Owen should be captain. He is a leader and leads by example.

Campbell is a c*ntox.

Owen was not a wrong choice for last night's game in fact, especially since even a fit Campbell will not be an automatic starter and Cole also has no club captaincy experience.

 

However, with Terry, Lampard, Gary Neville and especially Gerrard in the team, there is no way he should be captain above them.

 

All are better leaders.

 

All play in positions more suitable for directing play from, indeed even among strikers those of similar type to Owen are less suitable than the likes of, say, Shevchenko or Viduka (who will be national captains at the WC). Better at bringing others into the game.

 

Quite how Owen was made skipper over Neville (and Southgate and Seaman) 4 years ago - aged 22 - I will never understand.

 

Even more shocking is that he remains vice captain.

 

Hopefully McClaren will change that.
