A Fleet Terrier Post-mortem................

Recommended Posts

Hi to my friends at Stonebridge Road. Another season over, the World Cup on the horizon and time to take stock on our respective teams.

Fleet have obviously had a very disappointing season after what seemed like a very promising start. That depressing fact, coupled with a sizeable exit of players at the seasons end, notably Jimmy, it's hardly surprising that Fleet fans are looking at next season with trepidation. In my experience of watching football the hard-core fans are hardly ever wrong but they do seem to predict the worst. Being an eternal optimist myself I always look ahead with the belief the past has gone and can't be changed but the future is there to shaped. New players bring new optimism and while we're all feel p*ssed off that old favourites have departed new favourites are there to won. I believe we should see what the close season brings and look forward to a new beginning.

At Huddersfield Town we've had a very frustrating season. We started well and hit the top 6 by mid-September and never dropped below that all season. Pav Abbott rattled in 10 goals by mid-October and everything looked rosy. By the time we were drawn against Chelsea in the FA Cup 3rd Round we were challenging for an automatic promotion spot. The trip to Chelsea was superb, although we lost 2-1 and in the league all we had to do was keep our home form and pick up points away - Easy! Unfortunately Pav got injured and couldn't regain his previous form when he returned. Our away form was pretty woeful from January onwards and we dropped silly points at home, significantly we lost our last two home games, which meant we had to enter the play-off lottery. Barnsley were too strong for us over two legs and suddenly our season came to an abrupt end last Monday night! Defending has been our main problem, goalkeeping in particular. It needs sorting!

On the plus side, our young team (comprising eight lads from the academy) have done very very well and I must mention our fans they've been tremendous particularly away from home. At our last league match at Swindon we had 2,000 there for 'a nothing' game.

Lastly but certainly not least! Many thanks to Graham S. for keeping me informed of all thing Fleet! Cheers mate you're a star!

Good Luck to all you Reds, have a restful summer and COME ON ENGLAND!

Regards

I missed the Halifax Town game because the course leader at work (University) went on a 'stress out' and I had to cover her tutorial appointments until about 8pm that night. It was a last minute thing and I was pretty annoyed at the time but these things happen. Sadly, as it turns out her illness is quite serious and she's still on leave.

Unfortunately one or two Fleet games up north clashed with Terriers home fixtures, so I only managed the away game at York City last season - a dull affair on a freezing cold day.
