Given that we finished last season playing relegation football and given that the following were our best players last season...

Ross Smith player of the season

Craig Holloway great performances leading to selection for the national game squad

Charlie MacDonald most goals scored in a conference season for us and barring injury would probably have finished as top marksman in the league

Danny Slatter most man of the match awards

here is a poll which won't go down well...

Probably be accused of sticking your head in the sand, Truth, but apart from Saunders, Jackson and Protheroe being given the heave-ho, I can't say I'm losing sleep over the other departures.

Yes, I'm losing sleep over how we'll afford replacements and like everyone else am concerned about the lack of budget available, but the culling of the rest of the squad (other than those named above) was a pretty natural event given the age of a few of them, and the terrible performances from Feb-April.

Nice try. This has to be the poll which is the most weighted towards the conclusion that you wanted to achieve T ( or should that really be R...)? A fairer question would have been to treat each player on their own individual merits and not lump them into the groups which suit you best.

The real truth is we won't know whether releasing those players was a good idea until we see their replacements, however it is a fair point that the players who performed best last year have all been retained.

Somebody made a comparison on the other thread with Jacko and Bentley leaving at the end of our first season in the conference, but at that time Jacko was our captain and Bentley was our best player, they left of their own volition and both joined our conference rivals. This year the players that have left are not the best, have not gone of their own volition and I think that most, if not all of them will be dropping down a league or two in order to find another club.

The performances after Christmas were not good enough and we needed to make major changes, we are certainly doing that.

I am dissapointed about Jacko and Skins but other than that I think he has kept the right players.

Bentley went to Southend didn't he?

Despite getting bogged down in all the doom and gloom on here, I tend to agree with your last sentence.

We still have Holloway, both Smiths, Slats and Charlie Mac which is not a bad spine. We do need to get some more quality in though.

I'm glad that the headless chicken Gooding has gone though. Never rated him at all.

This may be a vallid point, but on a limited budget,he now has to replace many players, supposibly better than the ones released. like ive said before, either he has a very good trick up his sleave,or we are in the mire....

Joint with Che (2002/2003).

I would add Jay to this list.

Guilty as charged kmj.
The point I was trying to get across was that we couldn't go into next season with the team that finished this season so poorly and that the manager has managed to sign up the best players from last seasons team for next season.
It seems strange that the people who expected us to be relegated last season and should therefore have been the ones happiest with our final position are the same ones who made the most noise about our poor run of form at the end of the season and are now complaining the loudest when the manager seeks to address the situation.
Obviously I will be accused of wearing 'rose tinted glasses' or 'burying my head in the sand' or whatever the latest in phrase is but I think I will wait until I have seen next years team play before I make my mind up on whether they are better or worse than the players that have left.

Somewhere on another thread I actually applauded Daish for this.....

here

Quite the opposite.

I applaud Liam for the culling, as the results for the last 3/4 months suggest the current squad wasn't up to much.

However, that applause will quickly disappear if the replacements are not good enough!

.....so for once..... I'm not guilty.

I am, however, concerned at where the replacements are coming from,

considering the budgets cuts admitted by the club.

Andy Drury & Liam Hatch - just 2 examples of gems that can be found in the lower leagues.

The problem is we need several.

That said, I'm almost looking forward to next season and a new look side,

hopefully hungry for success.

Of course, all right-minded Fleet fans will be doing this.

The fact remains, though, that the discrimination against part-time footballers limits us unnecessarily in our search for new players this summer.

Of course I don't. But as this was not a consideration for you last season I believe that what I posted was actually fair comment.

Personally I hope that your interest in the Fleet can be rekindled and that you will watch them more than you did in 2005/06.

As a matter of interest, how many Fleet games can you watch for the price of one home game at the Boleyn Ground?

Depending on whether it was a category A or B match - the cheapest seats were £30 or £37. Sometimes it cost me £50!

(Just as well a couple of 7-fold acca's came up this season, one being a 72-1 job!)

Out of interest, how many Fleet games would it have taken to see the effort in one home match at Upton Park?

See you next season.
