Transition period

Recommended Posts

I don't mind a shake up, but as this moment, we have only 5 signed up players.

Now LD may well be negotiating with Holloway, McCarthy, Hawkins and Johnson, but with the signing on frenzy now starting to move into top gear, the best of those available will soon be snapped up. I hope our manager is not planning a holiday just yet.

As an aside, didn't LD sound fed up on his RK interview this morning!

Johnson would be an excellent signing and one that we could possibly make a profit on as I am sure that he will be playing at a higher level in the not too distant future, not quite so sure about Hawkins, he looked ok but not outstanding and i think McCarthy is past his best.

Don't worry C.G. there are always plenty of players looking for clubs in July and there will be plenty of players not being given contracts after trialing at clubs in pre-season.

This aphorism, or at least a version of it (i.e. 'if we can't afford to keep up with the Joneses, we shouldn't even try'), was originally used on here by JimGNFC. Credit where credit's due

Apologies Stu - original credit must go to you. But the more well-rounded phrase that I quoted was Jim's. <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

If going full time was only going to make a small difference, why go the whole hog so quickly.
My arguement is not with going full time, but as JC so eloquently put, don't try to keep up with the Jones'.
The net result is that we have lost 6 or 7 players who were better than they are likely to be replaced with.

Ahh so you know who the replacements are then...do share.

I had hoped you would put up a better arguement, Slarti.
LD has gone on record saying his new full time players were likely to be youngsters. By that we can infer under 20/21, because they will be cheaper.
Over 21, if they are any good, they will command a salary probably equal to, if not larger than the departed part timers.
So if we get youngsters, they are going to have to be pretty bloody good to equal the experience of the 1000 league games that Skins, Jacko, Macca, Provs and Jay had, and that excludes substitutes.
I admit openly that LD is a fine spotter of talent, nobody will deny that, but to match the quality that has been lost he needs to unearth another Theo Walcott.

Of course, one could turn this around and ask whether it was really worth turning full-time in the first place if doing so with our limited budget meant that we would could only be of a similar standard to when we were wholly full-time. Indeed, if full-time football with young players who earn less than several part-timers provides similar levels of attainment to part-time football, surely it would have been better to wait and see if we were able to climb the league with our part-timers, and, if this occurred and crowds began to swell on a consistent basis, then and only then consider a move towards full-time status.

I would not disagree with the above.

Personally I would have prefered the club to have worked harder at increasing gates before going full time. Increasing the gates to me is a much bigger priority.

But they didn't, so I don't bother constantly banging on about it ad nauseum . Its a chicken and egg situation, with valid points on both sides.

Once the board made the decision to go full time, the only way for a club of our size to do that, is pick up young hungry players whom have either not made the grade at the bigger clubs or are shining at the lower clubs, and not pay significant wages.

Also in the hope that you may generate transfer fees for some.

Like many on here, I don't see any reason why a small number of part timers can't remain in the squad. As long as they are good enough, and they fit around the full time set up.

And in view of this I am disappointed about a couple of the released players .

But thru my rose tinted spectacles , I can see the Fleet developing a reputation as a nurturer of young talent.

Maybe then we may get those turnstiles clicking.

Indeed - but if they are good enough, the full-time system should be flexible enough to allow them to be a proper part of the squad.

Are you still off work Gary? If so, why not give the Club a call and book an appointment to see LD and AK to discuss team matters. I'm sure they would be very pleased to one, know who you are, and two, discuss matters with you.

Do let us know how you get on.

Made that appointment yet CG? You appear to have so much expertise to offer the Club.

I dont think im sitting meekly on the fence!!!!! but sitting on the fence awaiting to pass judgment on liam daish, i say i and others who choose to do the same, are just awaiting to see who he brings in to replace those that have departed, before we completely lose faith with him, granted times running out, but none of us know what he has up his sleave.so untill he shows us, im happy to sit back and see.

"Peurine." Another word you've read on Confguide Gary?

So are you having a go at Bernard for not supporting the Fleet when he wasn't even born? That's a bit harsh. Your comments last season were pathetic especially within hindsight. You should take some time to read through old threads Gary, believe me it helps. Anyway wasn't you on here recently saying how you enjoyed reading through old post's?

Numerous are the times that I have been asked to 'get a life' by you, 'Chatham', but this one is undeserved, since it was not I who 'trawled' these historic threads.

If you weren't 'bloody angry' before, you seem to be now!
