s above, i rated PA when here previously.

Only slight conern is the spread betting odds as to how many times he will get sent off.

He is no pussycat imo.

My bet is twice,so thats severn games we will be without him for !!!!

I remember speaking to Paul at Crabble, nice lad, and very young then.

It's now three years on, and the fans at Heybridge speak very well of him. Plus Trotty has played with him and knows him, so his judgment has to be better than mine.

He could do well for us this season, so I am happy to welcome him back.

I have to admit I had hoped for a better first signing, either LP or JS. Im also concerned that PA's signing means we may not get LP or JS?

But RT knows how he wants the team to play next season. He must see PA having something worthwhile to offer. I shall support him fully until proven otherwise wrong.

But it would affect the budget though MM. Thats money that could be used on someone else. Cant see the point in changing one for another just for the sake of it.As others have said Trotty must have seen something in Abbot that we havent had the privelege of seeing over the past few years. Now if he's a similar player but costing the club less, less than Knight was costing us, then that would be acceptable at this stage I think.I guess he's in for his workrate & that alone will be a big help this year.We need grafters as well as the more skilled player on board this year.Lets not forget we need a team of players that are going to get us to the top of the league this year. No-more of the old status quo this coming season.

Abbott is miles ahead of Knight.

I thought he was Jay Saunders Mark 2 in the making when he was with us before-and still could be.

Jay made himself into a legend, and no reason why PA can't do the same.

Good signing

I personally think it is a good signing as he done well at Heybridge and if he done well at Heybridge he is bound to do well here. RT seems to know what he is doing and he seems to know who he wants for what, so lets not jump the gun yet when there is about another 17 weeks until the start of the season. Abbot also knows the ambitions at the club after playing for us before and im sure he will want to acheive great things here.

I dont think any of us saw enough of him first time round to really make a true assessment MM. Yes, what we did see was a tireless worker but his skills werent up to much & judging by the Heybridge fans that is still the case. I agree that his workrate alone probably makes him slightly better than Knight though I wouldnt go so far as saying he is miles better than him. Trotty is the key here isnt he? If he can work some magic on these lesser players then maybe a "Saunders 2" might be the outcome after all.I saw enough of PA to know his workrate cannot be faulted.I think we all wanted to see more of him when CK was here.Just a shame it didnt happen.Pullman was another at that time to be ignored if I recall correctly.Neither really got a good crack at it i.m.o.

Anyway now we will at last have the chance to really see what PA can do.

Wake up & smell the coffee people...

We all want the best for MFC, but look at the equations. We release Edwards / Allman / Kola / Knight / Egan & Yiga. The Manager has to employ another 5 or 6 players for presumably the same budget.

As such we're not going to get the likes of Saunders & Protheroe unless the start of the new season is a few days away & they're still unsigned. We have our big-name signings in Brayley, Hockton & Trott so another star signing from the Conference or Conference South is unlikely (unless the player concerned is uninterested in money).

So we have to look for emerging untapped talent from abroad (as per Benevides, Sesay, Hasim Deen etc.),emerging untapped talent from County or lower Ryman Leagues (as per Denver Birmingham ,Andrew Burke) those can be risky routes as CK found out for the past couple of seasons (think of the turnover last season) or we can go for squad members from the same level who Trotty already knows & thinks can add something to the squad.

At 23 Abbott is still young & Robin obviously thinks he can add something to our squad .. sounds good to me.

Nice post,and so true.

Evewn so, i do hope we can get one more 'star signing',and fill the remaining vacancies with a bit more than journeymen looking for a wage (Corbett?) or unproven players(Baxter and Burke)

At 23 ,Abbott has learned his trade, proven himself in this division and is still progressing.

Seems spot on to me.

One or two 'stars', and 4/5 more like Abbo and we will be flying next season

[color:"blue"]One factor we might have overlooked is that RT's wage might be transfered to the 'Management' budget. Which effectively leaves us with wages for 7 signings rather than 6.

Superblues you put it well but you are stating the obvious. However can you honestly say that on hearing about this signing,it get your pulses racing. Did it excite you! For most of us I would imagine there was not much excitement about it whatsoever.Yes we will trust in Trotty & his decisions & I am sure most of us will go with it but still its not the kind of signings I in particular was hoping for.Maybe its because I have seen a little of Paul before & maybe thats the reason why I am not as excited as I would hope to be. We dont expect to sign on "great" players by the lorry load but just ask yourself this question. What would you have felt like if it were Protheroe being signed on. I think the difference in pulses rate would have been extremely higher.Still this is just one signing so we will have to see what follows.

I'm excited !

Good player.

Signed early doors,

fans informed,

proper pre-season preparations,

16th May and we can put out 11 Ryman quality players on first day of season

9 of the signed players have experience in conf national -2 steps above.

We've never had it so good ,so soon !!

whilst i would equally love to see the likes of Protheroe, i've moved on-there are others out there.Remember how last season we all got 'wound up' and excited over Danny Chapman.we got over it.

RT will get it right for us.

Guess it depends on expectarions.

Personally, i'd settle for not being in a relegation battle and three really long cup runs.Obviously i'd ideally want more, but a stressfree season would be a bonus over the last 4 years

My memories of Paul Abbot at the Gaaaaate are of someone who played and to my mind was man of the match then he was sent out on loan. While away he was scoring/winning man of the match awards. Came back when we had a midfield crisis but the team struggled on as usual with PA left to warm the bench with another youngster (Webster, know with Darlington alongside Akpo Sodje). This last season When the supporters made the trip to Heybridge but the players left 1/2 of themselves in London, KP left pitch side in disgust to watch Chelsea on the club house TV and Ray Baker had is fallout? with CK, it was PA who stood out, he ripped us to pieces. I believe this is a good signing, i believe he will have the never say die attitude we have come to expect from Trottie. I would just like to say it was nice to see a Gaaaate side that was fitter than our opposition in the last few games.
