Good-bye Clarence Park [No.1].

There were a great couple of lines on 'Father Ted' when Dougal and Ted were looking at some cows in a field and Dougal couldn't work out why they looked so small, and Ted had to explain that when something is further away, it appears smaller than it really is, he may have been using a toy cow, a little plastic one, to demonstate his point actually, but you know what I mean.

Anyway,

Tell me I'm wrong but that roundabout at the bottom of the M10 as shown in GHA's first photograph is surely too small to have a new stadium constructed on it?

Even if I'm wrong, it's quite a busy roundabout at the best of times. How are people going to cross the road to get into the new stadium, do you think?

[And one last thing. I hate it when people put big photographs on here such that I have to scroll across to seee the full picture and the following messages. There's nothing worse. Well living in Iraq would be worse but you know what I mean.]

Well done for reducing the size of the photo, GHA.

See! That one will fit on the roundabout, no problemo.

I personally prefer the line of the other one that you put on here the other day GHA. Perhaps we should have a supporters club raffle. Win it and design the new stadium.

At the minute yes but wait until it’s finished. Been up to see it a few times. Wembley is going to be superb.

just think we’ve already been overtaken with the work of Herzog and de Meuron with the Arena and Eggs Nest.

It is finished isnt it?, looks like a business park with a handle.

Undoubtably the best stadium the UK’s ever seen. (besides our forthcoming project of course)

HOLD THE FRONT PAGE!! NEWS!!

Enough comparisons of the respective architects what specialise in 21st Century icons. I have some news.

As I was queuing at the newsagents this morning for this weeks Panini World Cup Superstars pack, my eye was attracted to page 3 of the Herts Advertiser under the headline "Soccer club wants new 10,000 seat stadium".

The news is repeated that Gibbo wants to move to a new 10,000 seat stadium on the roundabout at the bottom of the M10 [although that's the first time that I recall the size of the thing being confirmed in the press], and the article goes on 'But if the move does not go ahead, he has warned that he will consider taking up an offer of land in Hatfield to build a new stadium'. No further details of the land, or the offer, are given.

Unfortunately for some, the newspaper was unable to find any spokesperson from the District Council in support of the M10 relocation.

Rather, Cllr Chris Brazier, who holds the portfolio for planning and conservation said "...as much as we wish to support the club's promotion there is no way we could even consider a scheme like this at present."

The LibDem councillor for Park Street was similarly err.. err.. umm waht shall we say?.. 'cautiously lukewarm' [?]. She described the land as 'totally unacceptable for the club's relocation' apparently. She is quoted "Although the land is mainly owned by the Council, it is Green Belt and could not be released for housing [the value of which would fund the construction of the Stadium according to Gibbo elsewhere in the article] as we have met our allocation needs."

Gibbo is then quoted in the final part "We need a bigger stadium to get bigger crowds to get a bigger squad. If the Council wont get behind us then I may have to take up an offer of land in Hatfield".

Hmmmnnnnn.

Does anyone have a bus timetable covering Hatfield? Will the club have to be re-named?

Clarence Park holds 4,500 doesn't it?

I'd say that was bigger than our current average attendance. In fact, bigger than every average attendance in the Conference National at present.

Hi Laz. The average attendance at t'Park for the season just past was 580, although I suspect that the average for the period from Christmas onwards was closer to 700. I remember reading somewhere that the highest average attendances in the Conference Nationale last season were Exeter and Stevenage at around 2300 or so.

The ground at Stevenage has a capacity of 7100 as existing.

Leaving aside the International grounds and the clubs in the Premiership, most clubs when re-locating obtain Planning Permission for a stadium with a maximum capacity of X Thousands, but they then construct the thing in phases. Sometimes one side is left as a terrace until attendances warrant the construction of a stand. Often, four stands are constructed with the corners of the ground left blank for infil later. Some designs favour the addition af another tier to one or more stands as circumstances permit.

This morning's post has just arrived and there is an invitation from the York Road Residents Association to a street party entitled "Good-bye And Good Luck, You Hatfield Saints" for May 11th 2007.
