Grays

Recommended Posts

I went to the game last night.

I dont know how it looked on the TV but it was a cracker and well worth the entrance fee as, although I have seen more skillful games, the atmosphere was electric.

I'm not exactly a Grays supporter strangely enough, and I was on holiday at the start of the season and missed THAT thrashing. I hadn't seen the ground since the Ryman days and I have to say that although its still basically the same [****!!****]-hole as its always been, it was tidy and clean and a definite improvement. Its amazing what a lick of paint and a bit of pride can do to a ground.

We were in the Grays end but quietly willing Halifax to do the business, which they duly did! A thoroughly professional performance by the Shaymen who just about shaded it on the night, as they always looked dangerous on the break.

The night was notably for a couple of things

1 - Regarding the ground, the only turnstiles for the home side being in one place with little room for manouvre meant a fairly chaotic struggle to find a place to stand, and more importantly, leave after the final whistle. I thought it a tad unsafe as it took a good 10 minutes to get out of the ground.

2 - The Halifax supporters were superb! Keeping up a barrage of noise for almost the whole 90 minutes. I especially liked the chants aimed at the people in the flats watching the game...... Class!

3 - The Grays supporters were a whole lot quieter than I expected and needed to be cajoaled into singing by the Grays subs warming up on the touchline which was all a bit odd. They certainly made a lot of noise, but the passion was missing.

4 - The Grays supporters truely matched our expectations of the good old Essex types! Overall, the vast majority were very friendly, but one or two made some thoroughly unpleasant racist remarks about the the people living in the West Ham and Leicester areas. I'm no prude but they were very "over the top." No I didn't complain at the time because, basically it would have been difficult to get to a steward, and then identify who was saying what..... but I did consider the option.

5 - The home supporters slagged off Dennis Oli almost everytime he had the ball! If they don't like him, can we get him back? He was well shackled by the Halifax defence and had no clear cut chances .... but, he is obviously a classs player and provided an excellent cross for the Grays equilizer.

6 - Jon Nutter, another of our ex players had a nightmare! Ok he scored but for all of you who think Goodings crap, there is obviously someone capable of worse!

7 - The stewarding was soooo good! But they all looked strangely familiar! From what I saw last night, we should stop slagging our stewards off. They were excellent!

A great nights entertainment with the right result at the end of it but credit where its due to Grays, I was impressed!

FINALLY, Ashley Baines? He really is an oafish character isn't he!

For my sins I used to live in Grays and when the Fleet were playing away I used to take my littlen to watch them, at his age then a game of football is a game of football. Get them interested early I say. Anyway it's true that since the money has gone into the club they have shot up the leagues and I'm sure that there are some old supporters hanging on but, and I'm only talking three or four years ago they used to play on a saturday in front of only about 100 paying fans. Where were they when they were s**t, there biggest crowd was always on the 5th November when theyu used the pitch to let off fireworks. Boots and being too big for them come to mind....

I remember going to watch the 'Fleet play Grays Athletic on numerous occasions back in the early 70's in the old Kent Floodlight Cup competition (I could never understand, even by the largest stretch of the imagination, how Grays was in Kent).

The games were usually on drab, freezing cold and wet Tuesday nights and attended by no more than 100 supporters (probably less).

Grays Athletic and indeed the 'Fleet have come a long way since then. I wonder how long however it will be before the bubble bursts at Grays along the lines of Hornchurch and Canvey Island?
