Next Season's Attendances

Recommended Posts

Oh for a crystal ball, Tom.

The average over this last season was 580 or whatever, but since Christmas, it's higher than that at, what, 650/700 or so? Those last three home games had 850-900 of which 700+ were home fans I suppose.

There will be the curiousity factor for the first 3 or 4 home games and if we win them, will we get to 1200 or so? Crikey. If we lose them, however, how low will it go? 6/700? What sort of horrible range is that from which to set a budget?

It's a little more complicated running a football club than most of us realise!

Stevenage average over 2000 so we should get at least that against them. We are probably Oxford's closest away game, they average 5500 so we should get a good gate. Aldershot & Woking should bring plenty, suspect most gates against the southern teams will be 1000+ and with ex FL clubs making a first visit they should be well supported. Reckon we could easily double this years average thanks to visitors but we need to be careful with the admission price to increase local support.

We are a fickle support, i think we'll do alright in the higher league, people are clued up enough to know this is a better level so even if we're not setting the division alight we should be ok!

I think looking at the likes of Gravesend and Altringham may be a better indication of whta to expect as our crowds were similar on arrival to the conf and Altringhams went up a lot despite struggling.

If we do well, maybe we can look at the sucess story which is Grays, I don't think we'll go a Canvey!

I expect the muff to get 7000 a game

Hi Tom. Back to yuor post up above, the attendances for the last 3 home games were something of the order of 870, 840 and 970, but I suggest that the visiting fans on those days from Histon, Hayes and Weston Super Mare are unlikely to have been so impressed that they will come to our first three home games in the Conference!

The number of home fans for those games was probbaly in the region of 700/750 or so and for one of them, there were those two junior school cup finals beforehand which will have swelled numbers.

There will be some formula for guidance somewhere, but I wonder what is the average number of a club's travelling support, expressed as a percentage of its average home attendance. It wont be higher than 20%, nor less than 10%, say. If we take Stevenage, and if their average home figure is 2000, they will take 2-400 away. The actual figure will be higher the less distance there is to travel, so take it to the top of the average and add a few...500.

The number of our home fans for the last few games was 700, say. Add 10% just because we're in the Comference and then 10% because it's a locla derby. 13/1400, on that basis.

Here's where it becomes complex. If we have won 3/4 out of our 6 previous games, add 10%. If the reverse, subtract 10%. If Setevenage have won 3/4 of their previous 6, add 7.5% and similarly subtract 7.5% if it's the reverse. If it's raining, subtract 5%. If Watford are at home that day, subtract 2.5%, and add 2.5% if they are away. If it's Machester United at Vicarage Road, subtract 10%

I feel a head-ache coming on.........

I think that I missed two Exiles games that clashed with The Mighty Saints' games, HM, and there was that day that we went top of the League at Clarence Park, Irish lost with honour at Reading and I was at Stamford Bridge.

It's probably a good job that the Hatters didn't get promotion or we would be in real trouble!

Serously though, I would have thought that the quality of football which has been witnessed at CP this season would help boost our gates for the next campaign. Of course you'll always get a number of supporters who will be tempted by the numerous other local sides but on the whole, you would expect gates to rise. Add to the fact that Mr.Ridley is no doubt working hard behind the scenes to boost the club's profile in the local community and we might even have to open up 'Gate C' on matchdays.

You wouldn't have wanted to be a Stamford Bridge that day, HM.

The way the team has played, coupled with the success that it has brought, has seen the average attendance rise to 580 odd this season, an increase of 60% or something. And the increase from the first half of the season to the second half will be higher. For this purpose, we could take the average from the second half of the season as, say, 650.

I haven't been aware of any particular additional marketing or other initiatives, so its just down to the football.

Surely playing in the Conference with new opponents etc. etc. will add 20% or so, just from curiousity, and then the opposition can be expected to bring more. As Jeff King will confirm, no doubt, we have to keep it up on the green bit.

We are pretty lucky in that most of the teams in the conference next year are within easy striking distance for away fans. Grays, Dagenham, Gravesend, Crawley and Woking are an easy M25 trip away. Rushden Cambridge, Oxford and Stevenage are all pretty local. Tamworth, Stafford, Kidderminster and Burton are a pretty simple trip up the M6. Weymouth, York, Hereford and Exeter are well supported anyway so should bring a few. Southport, Forest Green, Morecambe and Northwich may be a bit less attractive but all have more support than Yeading Hayes and Thurrock.

With constant mention on the footy results, conference table and so forth and if we do okay I think that a regular home support of 1,100 is possible plus 300 away fans. So about 1,400. On the last day of the conference all the gates except Gravesend v Burton were over 1,500.

I think it is really important to keep prices as low as possible, there are going to be lots of games next year, 23 in the league, FA CUP fourth entry, LDV fans (or whatever it is now called) FA trophy, etc. and it is surely better to get more folks paying a bit less than less paying more. Family packages also should be considered.

This is still fifth division football. I'm sure people will want to charge more and I don't know what the conference set as a minimum but I'd like to see the price set at a tenner or maximium of eleven. Anymore and it really does start becoming onerous.
