So you do listen to SOME decent music way down south, best Smiths song.....??? Erm, difficult choice but I reckon 'I know it's over'(A bit like our season) slightly pips 'Vicar in a Tutu' and 'hand in glove' to the top spot (A bit like Aldersh*t are going to do to you old boys)

The point seems to have been missed that The Smiths were one of the most over rated bands of the '80s, in the same way Nirvana were one of the most over rated bands of the '90s (*waits for torrents of abuse*) - misery = talent all of a sudden.

 

Amazing how bands get this iconic reputation when the music scene at the time is going through a bad patch.

Been there, heard that etc.

 

Just don't see what all the fuss is about - most important band of the '80s etc - what about the Mondays or the Roses (or New Order), genuinely different, indie/dance cross over. The Smiths just happened to be better than the other miserable student rock bands at the time (and back to New Order, if Curtis had not topped himself then Warsaw/Joy Division would have cornered the miserable rock market and been far superior to The Smiths - if only they had lasted)

Jonny Marr is rated as one of the best guitarists of all time. Not because of his technique, but his originality in his style of play. A large number of his guitar riffs had never been invented until Jonny appeared on the scene. Not only did you have a band with a superb guitarist, but a band with an outstanding lyricist. Who had the ability to evoke a range emotions, when listening to his lyrics.. What a wonderful infusion of talent, don't you think.
