If Owen Hargreaves can make the world cup squad...

Hargreaves was by far the best player on the pitch today. Our defence was amazing especially to without for 120minutes. Rooney shouldn't have been sent off either - why appoint an Argentinan ref who cant tell a foul from a dive when South American football is known for its diving.

Beckham should have been replaced by Lennon from the start.

Lampard should have been replaced, this is a world cup and you do not play players how ever good they are if they are off form. Most shots on goal, without a goal and a missed penalty.

I cant wait to see C.Ronaldo get slaughtered in the Premiership.

what we've learnt:

1) Becks is toast as far as the England team is concerned

2) Hargreaves was the best player of the tournament for England

3) Sven's tactics could probably win Serie A but nothing else

4) Four strikers, two of whom weren't fit. How'd that work out?

5) Ronaldo will get slaughtered...

6) But if the roles had been reversed and the English had got to a Portuguese player there had better have been the same outrage

7) Rooney needs to learn to grow up

8) You can play a player £50k a week, but you can't buy mental strength

Very few of them were on form, though the defence was OK. The defence, Hargreaves and Lennon apart, very ordinary.

Why should he? Are you honestly trying to say that Scolari didn't know that Rooney has a temper and didn't tell his players to exploit it? That's what good managers do, expose other team weaknesses, cover there own and get the result and Scolari got it spot on this afternoon.

Maybe that's the point - maybe we're too honest? Unfortunately play-acting and 'cheating' does sometimes work.

Never liked Ronaldo though - hope the greasy little bugger gets plenty of stick from Neville, Rooney and co back at Man Utd.

Thinking about it, it hasn't been a very memorable world cup at all. The only match that has been memorable so far was the Holland v Portugal match, and that was memorable mainly for the ref's antics. Unless theres a great match waiting in the wings, I can't see football being the winner.

The rules wouldnt have been "bent" so much if the ref had control of the game. How many times did you see a Portugese player go down for diving and the ref give them a fowl, yet every time we made a perfectly good tackle we were penalised.

Throughout this tournament the refereeing has been poor, maybe instead of trying to crackdown on timewasting and creating stupid rules maybe fifa should concentrate on playacting and penalising areas that actually matter.

I personally hope Ronaldo doesn't come back to England now, for his own safety as much as anything else. The defence was outstanding today, Ashley Cole was my player of the tournament for us, Hargreaves, Lennon and Crouch also ran their socks off.

Personally though, I would change the title of this post to;

If Frank Lampard can make the world cup squad ...

Now for Nibbler's unbiased player ratings

Players who enhanced their reputations: Rio Ferdinand, John Terry, Aaron Lennon, Owen Hargreaves

Players who didn't put a foot wrong, but not one right either so call it average: Ashley Cole, Gary Neville, Peter Crouch

I'm slightly worried: Paul Robinson

Where the f*** where you?: Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard

Come in, your time is up: David Beckham, Sol Campbell

What was the point?: Theo Walcott

Duncan Ferguson waiting to happen: Wayne Rooney

I've got to agree with you Nibbler, but Ronny is a total w***** if he was not such a good player i'm sure we would have seen im on Police Camera Action as one of those northern drunken thugs, as for Lampard as we were always being told had more shots than anyone pity he didnot F****** score one.

Have to agree with that.

Ronaldo is a dirty cheating scumbag who I hope never sets foot on an English pitch ever again

ah ignorance is bliss. Simple fact is that is Rooney wasn't such a liability he would never have reacted the way he did and got sent off for it. Crucify Ronaldo all you like, but he merely exploited Rooney's mental state for his own gain. I actually hope that Rooney does kick seven shades out of Ronaldo when they go back to training, because it will just prove to everyone what a nutcase Rooney is. And if he does do it, I hope he never pulls on an England shirt again because you can't plan for a game with a player who you know can get wound up easily and will probably do something stupid and get himself sent off
