If his tactics against Servilla the other night are anything to go by I reckon England could well struggle under his guidance.

That said he will be working with better quality players than the majority that played for Middlesborough on Wednesday. Accepting that many Middlesborough players played well below their normal standards.

In some ways he should be applauded for throwing caution to the wind and throwing on 4 strikers when they were chasing the game during the second half, after all it worked in the previous two rounds. The problem was that Servilla are a far better side than either Basle and Steau Bucharest. From that point of view I think his tactics on the night were naive an showed his inexperience at the very top levels of football.

He has ability of that there is no doubt, but in my view he is a good 'club' manager. My concern is that being the National manager may be a step too far, too soon.

Disapointing though it might have been if a 'foreign' manager had got the position, I would have preferred that the job be given to the best man available. That man might well have been either Scolari or my preference Guus Hiddink.

He gambled three times running and the gamble paid off two out of three times. Of course he could have kept the match tighter and maybe only lost 1:0 but he would then have lost without ever giving himself a chance of winning.
You are right Sevilla where a much better side and the gamble was unlikely to pay off but surely it is better to go down trying than give up without a fight.
I agree that we would do better with Hiddink and absolutely we should have the best man for the job not someone who happens to be English, but I don't see that McClaren could have done much better on the night.
