Canvey Island v Concord Rangers next year?

Recommended Posts

Nationwide Conference National club Canvey Island look set to confirm their resignation from the league following a club meeting on Thursday.

Manager and financial backer Jeff King (pictured) revealed in April that he would be withdraw his investment in the club and reserve team coach John Batch has now been appointed as manager.

If Canvey Island do eventually decide to resign from the Conference, they have to confirm the situation by May 13th.

"Dreams of staying in the Conference have to be forgotten about," supporters liaison officer Glenn Eckitt said.

"The majority of next season's team will be made up of our title-winning reserve side. It would be unfair to go into a league where we can't compete."

If Canvey do withdraw from the Conference, then Tamworth, who finished second-bottom in the Conference, will stay in the Conference National.

"We now have to apply to the FA and our preferred route would be step eight which is the Southern League East or Ryman Division One," Eckitt said.

"That's what we'd like but obviously it's down to the FA.

"If we could get into the Southern League East that would bring back derbies with Aveley, AFC Hornchurch and other Essex clubs but I have to stress it isn't our decision."

It wouldn't be such a bad thing canvey being at our level next season, They do have a good away following, Apart from E- Town , Dartford, Borhamwoods nobody else seemed to have significant numbers travel,Its sad to see a club that recently won the F A trophy in this predicament but I guess we all know what it feels like.

I'm not keen on it for several reasons. True the larger crowds would be nice, but if they have a super-dooper team that will walk the league it's not really fair on everyone else, that's a promotion place effectively denied to everyone. Maybe they should not be allowed any players that have played above their new level in the last 5 years.

If clubs resign from a given level, and I'm not convinced that they should be allowed to, they should not be allowed to pick what level they play at. They should go straight back down to Step 5. Ideally they should have to stay where they are. If they struggle, tough.

If they can resign, rather than giving Tamworth a reprieve, another promotion place should be offered to Step 2. Excellence should be rewarded, not failure.

I don't have huge sympathy for Canvey. They only got where they did because a rich bloke poured money into it, his plaything. Now he's taking his wad somewhere else. That's always likely to be the case, if you live by the wad you die by the wad.

We don't have a super-dooper team. Our entire First Team squad have followed our Manager, Coach and money out the door. Our Reserves will take their place, they're young but up for a challenge.

We don't, we've taken voluntarily relegation. The National Game Board will decide where we play.

How will the National Game Board reach a conclusion? I assume it will have no concrete knowledge of the team's capability. So, will it come down to financial strength, support or just where the club can be most readily accommodated.

After all of the fuss about promotion to level 4 this season, that suggest to me that it has to be level 5, irrespective of the club's strengths and weaknesses.

A bonus for the ESL, that's for sure!

As it says above, I think we're going to apply for Southern League East. The National Game Board then decide through the FA (no idea of the process) if it'll be suitable.

If we were to go bust and re-form, it's more than likely that we would've been put in Isthmian 1 North, (so I've heard) but seeing as we're just having a change of ownership and resigning voluntarily it's more difficult to judge, especially with all this restructuring too.

We could end up in Conf South, (doubt it) we could end up in the Essex Senior.

So, how can that work. Will a promotion place be denied from level 5, or an extra team relegated. Or will one division be expected to play with an odd number of teams. That's a nightmare in season, but even worse when trying to sort out who goes up and down at the end of the season. Shouldn't it be a matter of simply finding the first vacancy/league short of its complement?

Hornchurch went bust and reformed, and had to re-start in the ESL, presumably as this is the lowest senior league available to them. They also lost the players they could no longer afford but were still able to pretty much walk the league. Canvey's crowds alone, even if dropping considerably, will be enough to make them giant fish in a very small pond.

Canvey are attempting to choose their own league by "resigning" and applying for a league that they fancy.

However, I really can't see the FA making a rational considered decision, they don't exactly have a track record in that department. To get a decision at all will be a result!

Maybe Canvey should be accepted for DL1E. The spare Conference place to be made up by promoting a Conference South club, whose place will be made up by promoting a SL Prem club, whose place will be made up by promoting whoever it was that came third in SL1E, to make room for Canvey.

That seems fair! <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

That's what I thought at first. Initially I thought we would take the place of one of the teams at Step 5 who couldn't be promoted cause of ground gradings. It now seems that all those in Step 5 will be promoted so whichever league we're in next season, one team from all the leagues above will be reprieved, (unless it's the Essex Senior then I think it'll just expand).

Tamworth will stay in the Conference.
Carshalton will stay in Conf South.
Hendon(?) will stay in the Ryman Premier etc.

Bit of a farce really, all because one guy got bored with his toy and went a got a new one.

When Hornchurch re-formed they started three leagues below where they left off, (ESL) as did Telford (Unibond 1) if we were to do the same, we would be put in Isthmian 1, but we haven't gone bust (yet) which makes it complicated to estimate.
