If your refering to me DOY about the two bwood games....

I admit it Chopper, I was referring to your unavailability during those two games. As I mentioned in my message, some things are more important than football and your situation in both instances illustrates this very well. I am sure we would have at least drawn the two games if you had been available. I’m also pretty sure we would have won the title had you played.

The point I was making was more a point about fan sentimentality associated with players in the team. One good example of this was the way Martin Peat was slated as soon as he stepped into your boots. He had a poor start to his game. I know he didn’t quite look the part, as he was a big bloke. He made improvements and pulled off a couple of good saves in the 2nd half. He was clearly nowhere near as bad as people made out on here. Mark Cousin’s also came in for a lot of stick on here despite some great performances.

I am glad to see you back Chopper. I hope you’ll still be with us next season. Enjoy the summer and see you at the Presentation Evening if it ever happens!

It was the way in which Peat was brought in that put him under such extreme pressure in the first place. Chopper turns up on the Saturday only to be told he wasn't playing. Peat must have known that this was a change that fans would be questioning. Again, poor management. Peat did have a shocker too. I haven't seen any posts slating Mark Cousins. The fans have been good to him and to his credit he did play well. However, as stated by a nnumber of us, he is not a long term option. The question will be has Chopper had enough of being treated like this (only he can answer this) and, if so, what is the managment team going to do about finding a replacment. It will be tough to find someone as good as Chopper prepared to play at step 4 level. In addition, with the large number of sides coming up to step 4 level, the pool of good keepers will shrink.

Agreed,

I have not read any bad comments about Cousins or his ability etc. He has done okay.

However,

The season is only just over, but what is the long term goal-keeping situation at the Club.

Chopper or........? <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/boxing.gif" alt="" />

ps,

When do Players normally sign on for the new season ?

They are not under long term contracts are they ?

A lot of comments are talking about 'the long term future' with regards mainly to our goalkeeper situation. Personally i believe that chopper is by far the best keeper in the league, i think it shows how well he is rated amongst fellow goalkeepers with the comments received on here (even if they are from sawbo shaun & smallsy)
Does anyone know how old chopper is? i remember him from the efc days and think he is around the 27 age (dont get to big headed if i got it a few years out) if i am correct then for the long term cousins obviously has age & time on his side and chopper could groom him into chopper II.

I hope this answers your question Gazza - Sorry to keep you waiting!

Thanks Duke appreciate your honesty....eventually! lol.

I admit I knew exactly what you were refering too & just wanted you to state it rather than hideing behind a rumour you may of heard.
On the day of the Wood away match I was not impressed to hear a similar story being relayed to a few fans by a member of the management team!
In that game Ken played a blinder & was in no way at fault for their goal, as ive stated on other threads but for some inept finishing by our stikers we could of gained a point.

Personally I dont have any sentimental attachment to Chopper, although I have watched him play going back nearly 10 years & have exchanged a few words with him at matches I doubt he knows who I am, but can honestly say in my opinion he is a top goalkeeper (and is also responsible for the greatest penalty save in the world....ever! Just ask Chopper about the Baldock FA Cup game) & judge him on nothing else, I sincerly hope he is back between the posts for The Town next season.

As for Mark Cousins im not aware of any criticism & Ken was only praised in his performances.

Still next season is not far away & I hope the management team learn from any mistakes they have made this season, on the field & off the field!

I could tell you knew what I was going on about by reading between the lines of your message. It seems as though Chopper didn't take it personally so I'm pleased about that.

I think we always have a sentimental attachment to the original line up of the first team we watch. For me you can't beat the line up of the first York City team I watched as a kid and we had to apply for re-election that season! For this same reason my favourite players at Town were in the first game I watched in the Essex Senior League last season.

You're right Ken was brilliant at Wood especially as their fans were giving him loads of abuse. I don't really think Mark Cousins received too much critisism. The main focus of the keeper comparisons on here revolved around who was the best shot-stopper.

It is highly unlikely that Cousins will want a long term career with Town. He is third choice at Colchester and will be looking to secure a pro contract at some stage.

He can go pro with us in the Football League in a few years time then! But he'll still struggle to get past Chopper - keepers go on till their forties now!
