Someone made a point that why should it be £30k accross the uk?

what I mean is, these fighters said they can't afford the cost of living on what they earn, thing is in London, that's true, but what about places in the North and West where housing and the cost of living isn't so high? The demand is unreasonable, they should re-negotiate at a local level to make it fair.

No doubt they deserve more but if they think the government are about to let them have 40% Then the floodgates open for everyone else.

Anyone else want a stand on the soap box.

Saddam's gone diplomatic all of a sudden....

Above the average national wage for a 2/3 day week for semi skilled manual labour sounds good to me.

Refusal to work overtime which if worked would increase salary considerably.

Complaining about having to take two jobs and then complaining that if they modernise they cannot do two jobs.

40 applicants per place must indicate that it is a terrible job!

Agreed an increase is deserved but there has to be give and take like a ban on strikes and accepting overtime.

Don't get me started on tube drivers

I agree that they should have more money in the South - London weighting should be increased. The goverment should step in and do something about the cost of living round here!

Did anyone see Jim Davidson on Des & Mel a couple of days ago?? He made a lot of sense.

Jim Davidson is a NAZI and if i ever had to listen to him "making sense" I'll kill myself.

On a lighter note Zeal, Holly Valence has the pleasure of our company on Monday night!

GHA, that's correct, Jennings Road. Yeah, it's my practical and I'm really scared! It's at 3.30 so tell all your mates to watch out as they come out the gates!

Regarding the firefighters, I do think they should get some extra money, maybe not 40%.16% which they are considering settling for is a more reasonable number.Teachers in London are now asking for a 100% pay rise! I really do think that this country is going to end up in the s***, my History teacher told me that when there are a lot of strikes on, it's a sign that the economy is about to take a downturn. In the Mirror there was a whole list of all the Unions that have striked: Firefighters, college lecturers, Tube operators, local government workers etc. It ain't looking good!

I'm worried about these student top-up fees.Do you think that if the firefighters do get 40% the Government will bring in these proposed top-up fees to help raise money?(which could be up to 15K PER YEAR!) Apparently they won't bring it in until after the next election but I don't believe them! Also, how come the Government can't afford to give the firefighters more money or abolish student loans but still find the money to fight a war most people in Britain don't want to happen?

'You have talked so often of going to the dogs - and well, here are the dogs, and you have reached them, and you

can stand it. It takes off a lot of anxiety'

'Those who forget the past are condemned to relive it.'

I do belive that firefighters deserve more money. But 40% is too much. 40 applicants for every 1 place, 4 rest days a week, and 10 deaths since 1990, show that being a firefighter is not a bad job to be in. More money, yes. 40%, no. Nurses deserve more money. Teachers living in certain areas need more money. However, I don't know enough about the whole situation to make a real, educated and fair comment.
