From this week's Herts Advertiser - Fan puts trip on hold for promotion push

The importance of the Easter weekend for City fans was illustrated as one jet-set fan flew back home from Argentina, a journey of nearly 7,000 miles for the games against Hayes and Weymouth.

Phill Spokes took his place among the highest crowd of the season, 977 at Clarence Park, along with his girlfriend Sue Davies, after the pair had interrupted a round-the-world trip to fly back from Buenos Aires, Argentina.

In an ironic twist Phill, aged 37, had previously been abroad during the 1992/93 season when St. Albans City were beaten in the race for top spot in the Diadora League Premier Division, but he had not then been able to fly back for the crucial match. The loyal City fan said: "Sue agreed we could come back and we are here for four weeks, which sees out the rest of the games and the play offs which it looks like we will be involved in now. We then fly back to Argentina and continue our trip. We are going to all seven continents and so far we have been to three."

Phill saw his first St. Albans game at the age of 11 in 1979 and he has followed the club ever since. He was able to attend the matches from August to the end of October this season but even then was not anticipating such a dramatic campaign. He said: "I didn't think we were going to be in the position we are, but I thought we would be a good team and finish in the top half. Once I was going away though, it did occur to me that it was bound to turn out like this."

City boss Colin Lippiatt was less than impressed with the refereeing at Weymouth and Phill is in agreement. He said: "We thoroughly deserved to win it and if it wasn't for the referee's decisions we would be here now praying for two more wins to get promotion. It is such a shame but I am still convinced we are going to get promoted. I just hope we don't have another unlucky day like that."
