Leading by example.

Recommended Posts

As an ex league player, a veteran campaigner over many years, senior pro at Fleet and team captain of a very young side, MCarthy clearly demonstrated how NOT to lead by example yesterday. Is it any wonder we are up near the top of the discipline league along with the cheats of Satanage, the thugs of Accy and the lumbering lummoxes of Tamworth, when our captain rises from the floor to retaliate against a slapped face. What did he expect the ref to do?

Frankly, the team and the defence in particular seemed better off without him.

Perhaps he should look to the young starlets such as Moore, Slatter and Drury who spent the afternoon getting battered and kicked without a word of complaint or a hint of revenge.

On that performance alone, he doesn't deserve to be captain, yet again his age, tired old legs and temper have got the better of him.

We could do worse than not renew his contract. <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/angry.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/angry.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/angry.gif" alt="" />

Cone on, Gazza! Don't hold back. Say exactly what you feel!
<img src="/forum/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

I was a bit disappointed with some of our directors loudly disputing the decision. Once Paul took hold of the guy's face (he didn't actually slap him, as it happens, but that's immaterial) he was always going to walk if the perpetrator did.

Think you might have gone a tad ott with your criticism of the player though. Silly. Should know better. Could have cost us the 3 points - against a better team we might have really needed a man advantage. But we all do stupid things in the heat of the moment. It's when you do it more often than you don't that you become a liability & I don't think we could fairly level that charge against Paul.

My point is, HE is the one player, out of the whole team, who should keep a cool head and show the boys how it's all done. Not for the first time he let the team down.

As has been proven, there are better players than him, who are younger, fitter, quicker and more disciplined.

If he cannot hack it at this level, as LD has already intimated, then he should be part of the changes that are wrung this summer.

I presume he meant that any player, out of contract, and failing to meet his high expectations, could expect to be considered for replacement.

A hot headed veteran, who has two hungry talented rivals in Smith and Smith, and with an indifferent discilplinary record may fall into that category?

But is he any different from McKimm who has been known to react if provoked and has seen his fair share of red and yellow cards? These players do occasionally cost you a match, very occasionally, but they also inspire those around them and probably look after a lot of the younger players on the pitch when the boots are flying.

The difference being, Stu, is that when McKimm reacted in the past he would invariaably have experienced campaigners such as Provs, Skins, Porter, Jacko around him to fall back on to provide the neccasary experience.

Yesterday, after MacArthy's red card, we were left with a team of comparitive novices

On this point i disagree with u CG, i dont think James Smith is good enough. He lacks pace, something he's not going to pick up as he gets older and personally if we could recoup our outlay on him i wouldnt be disappointed. McCarthy is a decent influence as a sweeper but again in a flat back four, he's not quick enough and will get found out. I wouldnt expect him to be back next year but we'll see.

I think Jamie's versatilty will keep him here. He has the admiration of LD,which seems to count for an awful lot, and as he showed yesterday, can be a handful as a "holding" striker, but is equally adept alongside Ross. Let us not forget the 2 Smiths were against McAllister and Richards - not the worst pair of strikers in the league by a long way.

I have to disagree Matt. I think that James has been our best player over the past few weeks.
He has shown more fight and commitment than the rest of the team, he worked hard and somewhat effectively when out of position up front and he looks solid alongside Ross. He regularly won challenges that he had no right to and the defence looked more solid with him there (I recall that the only time we looked a little ragged on Saturday was in the first 15 - 20 mins, but were in control after that).

Yes, he is not the quuickest, but then nor is Macca - simple solution, defend a little deeper

I feel that we have the makings of a solid spine to the team at the moment. Craig, the Smiths, Bowry/Saunders/Johnson (if they stay) and Charlie.

Where we are lacking is support up front (hopefully Luke will spend his summer bulking out and weight training) and we are severely deficient in the wide areas. For all of our plethora of full backs - none look like they are good enough and our only consistent attacking wide man is Danny Slatter

Of course, these are only my opinions - feel free to disagree

If McCarthy had not got sent off.....what was the next topic on your list....bumpy pitch ? hose pipe ban ?

I certainly didn't moan about the game - just the captain!

Very well played, Fleet. Looked a lot more composed and balanced when down to 10 men. Really pleased for Luke, if that had been Charlie we would have said goal of the season!! <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

Thought the defence did really well, in particular young Glozier, who has improved 10 fold, good reading of the game and some good crosses. <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Terrible crowd, though! <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

True, but

Care to offer another example?

Cruel, perhaps, but your post at the top of this thread reminded me in certain ways of Melody Ryall's over-the-top diatribe in the Reporter about Paul Gibbs' dismissal against Notts County.

Yes, McCarthy's actions were silly and irresponsible, but as others have said, all players lose it sometimes.

Has Jacko left then?

Anyway, Slatter's not exactly an out-and-out wide man like Jacko or Jukebox.

In my job, which by it's nature is confrontational with the public, I am simply not allowed to respond to word or deed - it is a sacking offence.
Many others are in the same position, too.
As club captain, Mac should have been leading by example, and played it cool.
