Canvey resigning from the Conference

Recommended Posts

Hope you don't see this as someone from a nearby team dancing on a grave, as it were, but might I suggest a more positive pr representation if / when the club is reformed.

I take the NLP on Sunday together with the League Paper and for Jeff to ban the foremost non-league paper was counter-productive to say the least.

Added to that is Dick Marshall's and Jeff's regular sniping of the local populace for the apparently heinous crime of supporting other teams. There's been occasions when I've been tempted to go with my son - after all it's just a bus ride away from home - but the negative impression the Echo reporter and Mr. King's given to non-regular attendees has put me off. The money has instead gone to my local ESL club.

A more welcoming, positive image would certainly help bring in a few more people. Emphasise the good of the club - the achievements, the loyalty of those that turn up, the clubhouse, all that's good about CIFC - and more fans WILL turn up. Along similar lines to this about promoting a positive attitude...

Chances are if we're in a different league next season we won't be having much segregation. We will also have two bars inside our ground. Is there a chance of making one of them non-smoking only? Or at least having both open during the game so no matter which goal Canvey are kicking into we won't have to travel more than 50 yards for a drink! <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

I have visted your website, you can keep your money, you are off your head. We try not to import nutters, we have our own!!!

Point of order. I do not have a website. If you are referring to Shrimperzone, that is one I haven't visited for around 2 years because of it's 'cliiqueyness' - if you don't drink in the Spreadeagle before and after games then they don't want to know you.

If, however, you wish to make a sweeping generalisation, why not try to use fact to back up your view as opposed to presenting view as fact?

Of course, if you believe that Canvey can do without the £100+ that may have gone the club's way this season, and perhaps in future, then fine. I'd much rather put it the way of clubs that appreciate it.

I suspect, however, that Mr. King would rather have taken this £100+ of a few floating punters in the past and not to have to bankroll the club as much as he has done. His recent local media statements seem to bear this out. I'm sure he'd feel that any Canvey supporter wishing to turn away good money is 'off their head'.

to be honest i think Shrimper has a very valid point, for two long the club has alienated people of the local area. encoraging people to turn up rather than bitch at them is surely a better idea.

Agree - we need to highlight the good of the club and not alienate anyone who wants to attend a game, spend money on a programme or beer.

Most people seem to have a first and second club - we need to attract those people and make Canvey their second club to go and watch. People will start to realise their is good local football to be had rather than jumping on a train and going into London or wherever and spending half your salary for the privilege. It's a slow and long process - we are probably only on the first run of the ladder and no one said it was going to be easy.

Have you noticed the amount of new posters on this forum - people are taking an interest.

I sometimes wonder if it would not be better if Jeff puts all the numbers in a hat and places on the pitch starting from the goalie! The jury is out for me on Keeling, dashing about all over the pitch then losing the ball might look good but isn't. We'll see who picks him up next season.

keeling is the difference in our team. games when he is on the wing we play so much better and everytime he is taken off we just look week and lack imagination. definatly been our bigest injury upset this season

I can see what you mean but IMHO he is a quality player whom we have missed this season.

He has a high work rate and scares the life out of defenders. He will never have a 100% succes rate but more often than not gets the ball into or across the danger area.

However, there have been games when defenders have kept him very quiet and his effoprts may seem like "a headless chicken". Like any player in some games he will excel and not in others.

Certainly an entertaining player whom I will miss next season.

good idea mouse you need to attract fans who like to have a first club & second club so a good thing to do is advertise in a southend programme & use it bit of propaganda like for example if you cant afford to go to southend every week then why not go to canvey island fc etc & charge at a good price so it will make em come again some times i been to west ham this season & the amount of times dagenham has advertise init & amount of west ham goes over there works so maybe an idea

I can understand why Southend supporters would not want to watch you,as the conference is regarded as part of the league and in direct competition with there league.

I feel if you drop a couple of levels, you may find that Southend supporters may follow you for the reasons of cost and that you will not be regarded as direct competition.

The whole way we market our club, not only at the people of Canvey, will have to change completely. Being the cheaper alternative may help us get a few fans from Southend etc to come over when they can't watch their own team.

I have personally been over to Southend quite a few times this year when Canvey aren't playing, just because I enjoy an entertaining game of football.

The trouble is that people don't consider Canvey to be entertaining anymore. If we can bring back this image, no matter which league this may be in, I think football fans will respond by coming to watch.

This isnt about SUFC, good luck to them, they have not looked back since that last gasp goal against us in the FA cup replay when we shouldve took em into extra time against 10 men, I truly hope they do well and dont suffer the last time they were in div 1/2/championship where they could only accomodate 11,000 and huge wage bill and got relegated 2 years on the trot, hey they were getting gates of 3,000 2 years back, how them "fans" come out the woodwork !!!!

Agreed. It isn't about Southend. Sure, there's an element within our support where a Canvey defeat brings a wry smile - but everyone I've spoken to, every message I've seen on a website from Southend fans, are concerned for Canvey's future and wish them well. 2 seasons ago we were on our knees both on the pitch and financially. It's certainly a case of 'There but for the grace of God .....'

A positive media image would bring nothing but good to the club. An excellent start has been made with the formation of the Trust. Perhaps a PR rep on your trust's steering committee would be invaluable?

I'd also suggest a quiet word with Dick Marshall. His match reports in the Echo are excellent but there's regular criticism towards the people of Canvey and Castle Point about their non-attendance which gives out a negative impression. How about turning it the other way - saying the average is only so much away from 1,000, come on, get yourselves there, all support welcome etc? Accentuating the positive is always better in my view.

Once the World cup has ended, how about running ads in the local free papers stating what league you'll be in, that you're very much alive and kicking and highlighting the benefits and pleasures of watching your club?

Of course, these are but a few ideas, but I can see with a bit of shrewd management both on and off the pitch CIFC can flourish again.

all they said was john has been offerd the job and they have applyed to play in the ryman 2 as it is a better standard then the ESL. there are only 16 teams in the ryman 2 more chance of going into the ryman 1 in the first season where the ESL is a hard league to get out of

so ryman 2 is better standard??? yet easier to get out of then ESL???? <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />
