What we are up against

Recommended Posts

When we are trying to sign players from League 2 clubs, this is the sort of wages we have to compete with:

League Two

Age 19-20 £16,000

Age 21-22 £32,350

Age 23-24 £43,650

Age 25-26 £46,300

Age 27-28 £47,300

Age 29-30 £50,500

Age 31-32 £52,000

Age 33+ £45,800

Average £49,600

Lottery ticket anyone?

Not forgetting, of course, that those wages are basic, and thus before bonuses etc.

Surely bonuses are only paid for wins? Pehaps that's why the Fleet didn't win many games! One way of cutting the budget!

Here we go, the official Gravesend and Northfleet spin doctor is on the case to show how we shouldnt expect too much as a full time side because we cant afford league two players.

The facts are clear. Do you homework before you go full time, if you cant afford to do it dont do it or at least dont get rid of all your best part time players before you have got a stable side in place. This we clearly havent got.

Grays Athletic - With a smart and astute manager, you can sign players who have previous experience with Aldershot and Gravesend and make them class acts in the conference without breaking the bank on expensive league two players as you put them.

If i remember Garry Hill did the same when he was at Dagenham, but oh yes, we didnt think he was good enough for Gravesend and we got Daish instead. Look where Weymouth are now.....

You can put all the spin facts on the issue Dave, but the truth is we just havent performed given the increased budget.

As you say, there is no need for G&N to be recruiting League Two Players. In fact, if we can't afford them, there is little point scouting them.

Rather, we should be looking to recruit "good" players from the non-league scene. Of course, some like Protheroe etc already had good full-time jobs so its not in their interests to go full-time.

However, there are clearly players in the non-league scene that would jump at the chance to play full-time football and are of the required calibre. Sam Sodje and DJ Campbell are prime examples of non-league players that have gone onto "bigger" and "better" things.

For next season lets see a lot less "loan" players from League Clubs. All you are doing is developing younger players for a "League" Club, with no long term gain for G&N. Its such a short sighted approach!

If we can't afford to keep up with the Jones' then we shouldn't even be trying . . .

More stupid players, with cr@p jobs, is what you're trying to say, Jim?

I suppose the most important result of the season will be at the bottom of the P&L account not on the field, there have been plenty of guesses on here about what the budget was and how much the falling gates would hurt us but we won't know the truth until the club declares its profit/loss for the season.
If we continue, as Roly said, with a Conference South budget then we will at some stage end up in the Conference South.

Unfortunately, thanks to the transfer window, clubs are likely to rely on these more and more. It's very difficult to assemble a sufficiently large squad of your own players by the end of August.

That said, perhaps the club's complaints about not having a big enough budget to bring in sufficient back-up during our recent injury problems could be avoided if the squad were still predominantly part-time, since a smaller wage per player would allow, in theory at least, a greater number of players to be on our books at any given time. More evidence, in fact, that it shouldn't matter whether players are part-time or full-time as long as they're good enough.

Slarti, this is just more Gravesend spin, im sure most conference south teams dont field two full time goalkeepers in their ranks and how many south sides are full time, its not the majority thats for sure. People need to stop making excuses and blaming other people, other things, budgets, whatever, its all very lamentable.

If anything, what these figures actually tell us is how important it is to develop your own players. from a youth side and the lower leagues.

Luke Moore, before that Liam Hatch, Jimmy Bullard.....
