urchins in 10 years

Recommended Posts

This is a great thread and a conversation that I have had with Mr Tree for a good couple of seasons now.

When we were flying high in the connie south it was starting to worry me that our identity would be taken away and more importantly our sense of family.

I mean, what league club would let you have a beer with the team and club owners after a match?

Most of us are now at a stage where we all recongnise each other, either at the ground or walking around town. If we were to become a league club there would be thousands more fans (not always a bad thing) and for me, we could become faceless.

Right now we travel to these wierd and wonderful places and they know us before we have arrived..... where's ESU and his big ears, Treeboy and his MegaCone....... the list is endless.

These are truly the salad days, make the most of them fellas.

Good thread lads and a very positive one.

The big games were undoubtedly a thrill for all and it gets the old adrenalin going big time.

Our rise to Connie South was unbelievable with a few hiccups along the line, let's face it we really should have finished better than 5th in the Ryman Prem, and would have done but for some crooked ref!

Let's enjoy our footie for many years and with the club stabilising in either Ryman 1 or Prem or even Southern, mixed with some big days home and away.

good one ESU

I agree with all of the above really...so many different views and so many variations on the theme...a great 4 years mixed with plenty of tears of sorrow and joy but we are still here ...still winning and still together...

this season in the esl has been one of the most enjoyable of them all and as westy so rightly says....'enjoy them..they are salad days..'

next season will be another adventure which will take us who knows where...who cares...I shall just take it all in my stride and enjoy every second of it and I have no doubt we shall be competing at the top end of our new league and ruffling a few feathers in the cups...our young team will get better the longer they stay together...

happy days and long may they stay with us...

Can I have a say...yes: I have loved the past few seasons since the days of Jonah and his boys through days out at Wembley, Thame, Bognor et all.

The fact is if you love your club, you will stick with them regardless of what happens, because at this level it's about the banter as much as the footy. there are so many brilliant things about this club, the cameraderie, the set up, the pitch, players etc and we've all just adjusted our expectations to suit the positions we've been in.

I'm pretty sure if we'd made the conference with a team like we had we could have won it and gone on to league football, BUT could we have grown with it? Would the locals come out in sufficient numbers to truly keep the club going as a self sustaining business? I doubt it.

I'm more than happy with things this season, I'm glad we've played in the ESL, but equally I'm pleased that we're moving up to a level that the set up deserves. To get back in the conference south must be a realistic goal as we have such a strong fan base, but as Dover, Bath, Wimbledon and others will attest, you have to work.

There's many a good season ahead, big away days and loads of laughs. That's why I keep coming back, so....I say bring on the future and all it's surprises.

I can't really say anymore than whats been said above. However I do agree with the few that said about the Conference; so many things would have changed if we'd have got into it and I'm not 100% sure I would have liked all of them...

...I mean for starters all this seating, no beer, swearing, segregation bollox would have put a spoiler on a great deal of things...

And as also mentioned above, the would we have kept our status...our identity? I like it how it is now on the terrace. Everyone knows each other and you know where you stand, would that have changed as the Eastside expanded?

As Bridge said, money is a major factor. We of course want to keep self sufficient, as I believe we are at the moment but there comes a point when thats just impossible.

I wouldn't nessasarily (sp) decline a place in the league but, again, as mentioned above, the small fish in a big pond factor comes into play...

However, this is all pie in the sky at the moment and I for one just cannot wait for the coming cup finals and the next season. I have thoroughly enjoyed the ESL but to a certain degree feel it's nice to be leaving. Mitch said "I'm glad we've played in the ESL, but equally I'm pleased that we're moving up to a level that the set up deserves." and I couldn't agree with him more.

How refreshing to be reading a great thread with sensible and honest input.

In 10 years I’ll be a gibbering alchy like ‘Mad drunk man’ with me lungs fcked by passive smoke.

But I’d be happy for the daughter to push me round to the ground in me wheelchair to watch the Urchins in the Conf. Or Conf. South.

Any higher than that and it gets a bit precarious with sponsorship deals and a big wage bill.

Plus you loose the intimacy and freedom we enjoy so much now.

WALLOP !!!
