Canvey Island manager and director Jeff King will scale down his investment in the club at the end of the season.

King's businesses have sustained Canvey's climb up the non-league ladder to the Conference since he became manager in 1992.

 

But, with crowds that at times have dipped below 500, King will no longer continue being the major sponsor beyond this summer.

 

He said: "It's difficult when you are playing at home with gates of 4-500."

 

"We charge nothing like Football League clubs but if people choose not to go, we can choose not to waste our time and money," King told BBC Sport.

 

"When you are talking to a counterpart from a Surrey club who says it's hard to make ends meet with an average gate of 1,900 that puts it into perspective.

 

"It looks like people in Canvey don't want to support a team in that league. If they do, now's the time to show it."

 

However, King will not walk away from the club which he has guided up from the Essex Senior League.

 

He said: "I won't dump it. I will make sure everything is okay. I won't hand it over to an individual who will change his mind in six months.

 

"I will put in what other people put in, but it won't be all me."

 

King held talks with a representative of Canvey's independent supporters club on Sunday to outline his plans.

 

And if no new major backer comes forward he will be happy if the supporters can come up with the funds to have a greater role in the running of the club.

 

"The loyal supporters will rally round. They won't let it die. I want them to have it and I will help them," King added.

 

Since winning promotion from the Ryman League in 2004, Canvey have consolidated their position in the Conference, despite their part-time status.

 

King looks certain to keep them up again this season.

 

But he is unsure of what his role will be next season and with several players out of contract in the summer, Canvey face a potentially crucial period of change.

Sounds like toys out of pram - perhaps some of the suggestions we have made have rankled a bit and the rebelous plebs need to be put in their place.

well i guess its possible if he pays back the money or future club pays it. still another one plucked from the rumour mill a while back was that southend wanted him but jeff wanted £100k for him. who knows what is true and what isnt though. boylan a couple of years ago was on fire and still a class player. the injury problems of late may mean he struggles to get a league club though. who knows eh????

I reckon Grays will probably sign him even if they go into the League. Would be very hard seeing him play there but wherever he plays I would like to wish him all thge best he has been a wonderful servant for the club.

It was on DAB. Missed the first few minutes. He confirmed that he is no longer providing the financial assistance. Seems some of the back room staff will still be around and he said further info will be given over the forthcoming days.

He said that even if we got a big crowd on Friday he knew it would dwindle soon after.

Said Lee asked to go on the transferlist before all this business came out.

He mentioned the die hard fans and thanked them for their support
