Rothwell Town 2 Enfield Town 2

Gate 252

Cousins, Campbell, Negus, Gant, Allen, Hannigan, Velandia, Hall, Ritchie, Hammatt, Magona, Morgan, Paul, Nyman, St Louis, Woodward

Well town moved closer to a playoff place today after a costly substitution change. Town started well against Rothwell and whilst end to end stuff town looked to have the upper hand. Finally on 16 minutes a lose ball in the penalty area and Paul Campbell and Toms Smith the keeper went for it, Paul just managed to scoop the ball away from Smith and Smith then pulled Paul Campbell leaving the Referee in no doubt pointing to the penalty spot. Rudi Hall stepped up and scored. 0 – 1. Niall Ritchie was in inspired mood running down the wing well and making a fantastic pass to Paul Campbell in front of goal who skied it! Damn! Paul Campbell on the wing battled away to win corners out of what seemed nothing. Mark Cousins saved well. Just on half-time Rudi Hall ran round and through about 8 or 9 players and was well into the box before being brought down – Penalty? No this ref was not going to give a second penalty no matter how blatant. So half time Town were well on top.

The second half begun wobbly with a misunderstanding between Gant and Cousins almost letting a striker in on goal. Matty Negus was tackling back well the whole of the second half. Bryan Hammatt coming in from the left wing was in a one on one with the keeper to shoot for the small gap rather than square it to Niall Ritchie with an open goal. Paul Campbell was in an inspired mood and he and Niall Ritchie were doing exhibition type football. On 55 minutes Hall did a free kick and followed up on it to nail it in the back of the net. 0 – 2. At this point it is all town and some complacent fans start singing “Easy”. Steve Magona had a shot on target. Corner comes in and Steve Magona heads over. So Town comfortable and coasting. Niall Ritchie taken off and Trevor Paul on. A Bryan Hammatt half chance gathered by Smith. Bryan Hammatt shoots wide as the wind catches the ball. The best chance to bury the match fell to Trevor Paul on the 6 yard line from a lovely cross by Bryan Hammatt. The ball appeared to dwell awkwardly between Trevor’s legs leaving Trevor unable to bury the ball in the back of the net. Straight down the other end on 74 minutes Houghton found Cousins in two minds whether to come or go for the ball leaving the simplest of chips to score. 1 – 2. On 90 minutes a free kick came in for Jenkins to bury the ball in the bottom corner. 2 – 2.

The lesson is it isn’t all over till the fat lady sings and Rothwell were a poor side that town flattered by allowing them to draw.

Well it looked a reasonable pass to me.

1 - 2 with only minutes to play. I didn't see any time wasting tactics from us, such as substitutions that take time. In fact Rothwell were doing the substitutions and time wasting. Ball up the field and into the corner area.

Yer, I do not think we took that "proffesional" approach to waste a few minutes that may have made all the differance. <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/boxing.gif" alt="" />

The substitution did nothing for us yesterday. Niall was the outlet ball and was linking well with Paul C. When he was removed it left us with two players of a similar nature. Not a good move!

The game was there for the taking yesterday and we left ourselves short at the back when they played with the slope. Surely at 2-0 up, and making a substitution, we should have brought on fresh legs up front who would run and run or a defender to close down their attackers.

Can Jim Cunneen tell us when we last lost a two goal lead?

PS. The drive around Norhants was a wonderful experience Mr Happy!

It has only happened twice and both of those were in Essex Senior League Cup ties.....

1. v Eton manor 30.11.04 Allen and Davies gave us a 2-0 lead after only 7 minutes they scored in the 64,75 minutes: draw 2-2

2. v saffron Walden 13.10.01 Clarke and Antoine gave us a 2-0 lead after 75 minutes they came back in 78 and 86: draw 2-2

err thats it...

btw notice the gate for our home and away games for Rothwell were both 252.

Agreed - up to a point. Niall was doing ok, but was struggling to play with his back to goal, which really isn't his game. When the ball was played up to him, it seemed to be coming straight back too often. I would, however, have brought Dean Nyman on, as this is one of his strengths.

Other substiutions I would have made:-
Woodward on for anyone in the 91st minute
Morgan on for anyone in the 92nd minute

Get my drift?

I can always trust you to come back speedily with the answers. Mind you, it did take over an hour to research!

but that did include making a coffee and laughing at some of the other stuff on here.

We were two up and, although were not dominating the game, were in control. Nothing needed changing when Niall was brought off. If anyone should have come off it was Brian. He played poorly yesterday. One substitution and it all changed and we were struggling. Brian and Trevor are too lightweight up front. They seem to back away from any challenge. A fellow supporter said that Trevor missed his chance as a defender got to the ball. Sorry, but a stronger striker would have fended off the challenge and scored.

In the last 10 minutes, Trevor Paul failed to closed down their last defender, which gave him time on the ball and allowed him to turn and clear from the goal line.

Defending MUST start with the forwards

- a simple school boy instruction -

and failure to do so was just plain poor play and extremely LAZY.

Sums up his general play and contribution.

Players who fail to work for the team can expect to get grief from fans.

Thats the way it is. <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/boxing.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

It was never going to be an easy game, shocking pitch, very windy. The lads did ok in the first half got the goal up. don't remember rothwell havin a shot in the first half.

Second half Rothwell had to come out to try toget somthing. Rudi got a good goal. Even after that rothwell didn't look like scoring. The turning point seemed to be after Trevor had missed that chance which he should have scored(he knows that, just low on confidence). Rothwell near enough went up the other end and scored. Then last kick of the game they scored to.

All in all 2 points dropped but all still to play for. It aint over.

Chopper, Agree with your summing up.

However, the point made on here is that Trevor is , as you say, low on confidence and therefore he should not have been the one used as sub for Richie.

In my opinion for what it is worth Richie should have stayed on the pitch, but that is just my view.

The decision has cost us 2 points.

Bring it on against the E's. <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/boxing.gif" alt="" />
