4-4-2

I think it is fairly mixed, minime.

His tackling has got much better as the season has progressed. His passing and crossing has always been pretty good. He makes mistakes, but who doesn't? I do not think he has played in the right position for him in all his games, which may have had an adverse effect.

But he is one of our most played players, with 41 matches started out of the 46, which I think is very laudable, as he has certainly taken a fair number of knocks.

He is not the best player that I have ever seen, but certainly not the worst. And considering the barracking he has had from a selection of supporters, I admire his grit in getting out there and doing his bit despite that.

So I guess I think there is more plus than minus, where he is concerned, for me.

(By the way, I produce statistics as part of my job, so that little thing was no trouble at all)

When he first joined us Standen was a 4-4-2 player asked to play in an unfamiliar wingback role. It took him some time to get used to it, sometimes finding himself caught upfield out of position. This was made worse when he was asked to take the inswinging corners from the right.

He also used to get too stuck-in, resulting in sendings-off.

Unfortunately there is a little bit of lynch-mob mentality in football crowds, which can cause dislike of a certain player to fester regardless of his performance. A scapegoat has to be found for the team's lack of success; in our case this season it has been Dean Standen.

The low point of this was during one away game when fans on this site were blaming Standen for Margate going 2-0 down. This is people who were not even at the game. As it happens Dean was on the bench that day, and when he did come on we played much better.

I repeat, these smart-alecs were NOT EVEN THERE! How much more evidence do you need to show that the criticism is irrational?

This player has not been in disciplinary trouble in recent matches (which I believe is partly due to Chris Kinnear's influence). He has shown good defensive and distribution skills. He works hard and appears to get on well with other team members. I think he will be well suited to the left of midfield, giving us width and attacking options in a 4-4-2 setup.

Sorry to disagree with others whose opinions I generally respect greatly, but this is the place for saying what you think.

AS most know, i rate DS quite highly and would happily see him zat either left back, or in left midfield in 4-4-2 where he and Allman can interchange and give each other cover.

I think Dean is a better bet in this position than Knight

Maybe Deen got it right by seemingly not doing much at left wing back.

At this level wing backs just do not work.

Thats why 4-4-2 does work.

The players are not good/fit enough to go flying up the wing and then recover to full back.It just don't work.

Deen got it right by keeping his position, and thus not giving the opposition to threaten down the right flank.

In first half on saturday, Allman tried to go down the wing a few times, and needless to say,Yaku got space down that flank.

In second half he played more defensively and we did not get caughtr out.

Also Oates stayed further back as we had Yiga to foray down the right flank.

Let defenders defend-keep it simple .

Loing live 4-4-2

June,it is obvious Deen Standen is one of your favourites. He isnt one of mine despite all the statistics you throw up.He most certainly hasnt been the force that you mention he has been.Apparently he has been played out of position but what IS his rightful position. When he has played elsewhere he hasnt shown much either so using that as an excuse wont wash with me I'm afraid. He has been played many times I agree but something somewhere tells me he was CKs favourite too so the fact that he did get that amount of games may not be wouldnt be because of his form on the pitch.I havent met him on a personal level & I am sure he is a smashing bloke so that is not included in my criticism of him.I personally have never barracked him despite seeing him play bad though I have heard through you that others have & that IS wrong i.m.o.I am presuming that was at away games though because from where I have been standing at home games despite talking amongst each other about his failings I have never heard that at home matches.Must have been just where you stood June I suppose.

I base my remarks on what I have seen of him on the field of play.I am not fortunate enough to be able to attend many away games like you & many others do & maybe he has shown more away from home than he has at home.If I cant witness games I dont comment. That would be wrong. But its those games I have witnessed that I sum up on. I most certainly do NOT have an issue with him in any way whatsoever. That is incorrect to say so. The fact that he continually dissappoints me is the only reason why I think he isnt a player of enough ability for the team we are getting together. That is the only reason why it seems I criticise him more than others.I dont keep that many records & statistics as you & others do but I do see consistently see poor form from him & thats what I base my remarks on.To me,he dosent contribute enough to the team.I will credit him with his running abililities as he does run around a lot.His stamina cannot be taken into question. But as I have mentioned in the past he does look like a headless chicken when doing so. Sorry, but if he were to have shown ME more then I would give him the praises I think he would then deserve. We shall just have to differ on our opinions about him thats all.I would be amazed if he were with us next season. And it wouldnt be because I have been on about him so much but because those running the show will have seen what I have seen from him. Nothing to warrant consideration.
