CANVEY'S POTTER: CROWDS "A JOKE"

By Sam Elliott - Posted: Fri Apr 07, 2006 12:02 pm

CANVEY goalkeeper Daniel Potter has launched a scathing attack on club’s stay-away fans.

The Gulls played Woking in front of a Conference season low of 358 on Tuesday night.

That came only four days after 426 turned up to see the draw with Forest Green Rovers at Park Lane.

"I don't know what we have to do to get a decent crowd," Potter said.

"It is the highest position the club have been in and to get crowds of three and four hundred is an absolute joke.

"I don't think the place deserves a club at this level of football," he added.

Yes, tongue in cheek. But seriously they must have some mates.

They probably do but get on the free list so are not added to the attendance figure.

I don't particularly care at the moment whether everyone inside the ground paid to get there or not. I think the biggest thing is getting them in the ground, creating a better atmosphere and just making the team look more supported. We can worry about making money later.

I'm not suggesting we let in every man and his dog for free, by any means, just that it's more important that we have a fan base.

Thimk that money is an issue here though. Saying that, if you can entice people through the gate then it adds up what you can still get out of them through a programme, 50/50, burger, beer, chips etc that's at least £8 for starters for 1 person. In the end, everyone sort of wins as we get more through the gate when word gets round and some revenue comes in as well.

Are your low gates historic or a recent thing. It does surprise me that your gates are the same as Hornchurch in step 5 but not knowing the area i do not know what your catchment area is like.

I do not think you are expensive but wonder if the success of Southend recently is a factor.
