With the “horrible” Mr Ives in the middle we were not going to get many favours today and so it was when on the 6th minute he awarded a free kick to Stamford on the edge of the box. Angel fired a shot straight past the wall and in the corner by the post. 0 – 1. Yuk what a start but if they were going to score could not have been a better wake up call. The wind was at town’s backs and passes were flying past their intended recipients. At the other end Paul Campbell was brought down in the box nothing given. Matty Negus was working hard on the wing to get crosses in for Niall Ritchie to connect with. The call went out from the Stamford bench to sit back on the 1 – 0 lead and take their time. Thank you very much for the daft strategy. 0 – 1 was never in our estimation and with Stamford doing all the running in the first half it felt like they had twice the number of players out there. Paul Campbell tackling back cleanly but town looked on the rack. Steve Magona obviously had the Vinny Jones role today and was booked for a clattering tackle. A few minutes later he did another. Town fans became nervous that one more of these and Steve would be walking and we’d be down to 10 men. Stamford scored again but they were adjudged to have fouled the keeper. Matty Negus chased down a ball inspirationally avoiding it going out of play. Niall Ritchie was turning on the skill to go round player after player. At the other end a striker got through and was in a one on one with Mark Cousins and he saved. Yes. Phew! Town fans started to think if we can just get in at half-time and regroup 0 – 1 would not be too bad. Suddenly town win a corner. In the 37th minute Al James Hannigan rose like an iron bar to a Rudi Hall corner and the ball ricochets into the net. Nice one Al J! AL J goes wild along with all the relived town fans.

Second half and the Stamford players suddenly want to get on with it and appear from the dressing room very early whilst Town use their time wisely taking Steve Magona off and bringing on Steve Velandia. On the 46th minute almost from the kick off and whilst most were still in the bar Rudi passes to Stevie and Stevie passes to Rudi and Rudi passes to Stevie all the time going forward in a straight line towards goal. Stevie now in the box nails it yes 2 – 1 sliding it the other side of the diving keeper. The ground echoes to the chant “Stevie Velandia King of Columbians.” But don’t forget Rudi. Awesome goal which totally destroyed Stamford. Town fans now relax accepting that the result was no longer in doubt. The cry went up “Come on Paul Campbell we want a goal from you” and we got a stonker. Niall Ritchie and Paul doing a 1- 2- 1 again and Paul on the by-line just cut in towards the goal until in front of it and then nailed it to the right of Pledger. 3 – 1. Lovely Jubbly. Does football get any better than this? Town fans started the tune to the great escape. But we weren’t over yet. Niall Ritchie down the right wing squares the ball to Bryan Hammatt on the edge of the box who volleys it past Pledger. Just on full time Stamford won a corner and the cross came in for Bowater to glance it past Cousins who had no chance. A cracking game if you were a town fan.

I think Jim over-estimated Stamfords physical game, and mistakingly sent out a side designed to battle and contain, rather than one to attack from the start. In my opinion,it was mistake to bring in Gant/Magona for Nyman/Velendia.At 0-1 down,it seemed an even bigger mistake.Cousins seemed at fault for the Stamford goal in the first half. The wall was lined up incorrectly and the Stamford player simply placed the shot into the ungaurded corner.

In my opinion the central defensive partnership of Allen and Hannigan shouldn't have been disturbed. To be honest we looked out of shape and unbalanced in the first half.To Jims credit he realised this and replaced magona with valendia second-half,and was rewarded with Valendia scoring a brilliant goal within 20 seconds of the restart.Afrer that, velendia controlled midfield and Town controlled the game.

I thought the first half was disappointing, especially the team formation. It seemed that players did not know what to do and when and the defence were left with too much to do on too many occasions.

However, an inspired substitution brought on Stevie V who gave us the goal we needed. Anyone notice that the three second half goals were from play 'on the deck'?

I also thought that the Stamford supporters were very gracious in defeat and even took the time to congratulate us at the end of the game.

Congrats to Mr Ives.

Good luck to Steve Baldwin at Hornchurch FC.

Didnt understand the starting line up at all, why drop Valandia? we were all over the place in the first 30 mins, constantly knocking the ball forward in the air which was swallowed up by Stamfords 8'4" defenders.

After Magona's awful challenge, about 5 mins after being booked, I Feared the worst & prayed for Valandia to be brought on.

2nd half performance was top notch with some sublime goals, Ritchie working as hard as ever & it was his challenge that led to the ricochet for Hammett to score the 4th.

Cracking result, C'mon the Town!

I'll tell you what happened next, I ran like a demented lunatic behind the goal celebrating like I use to 20 odd years ago!

"What was that all about"?

Dunno but it felt great at the time, however Rock Steady did tell me to pack it up & behave myself!

Then when the 4th went in he looked like an extra from River Dance!!

I didnt get a picture of the goal because I was waiting for the greedy git to pass to a team-mate NOT the back of the net.

Players, you cant trust them to do anything right!!

Well what can you say? A very entertaining match, and if you missed this one than you should be quite annoyed with yourself! I arrived about 15 minutes late, so was fortunate to miss the opening goal.

My first impressions were that Stamford are a very organised team, and their position in the league shows this. At times in the first half, Town were very scrappy - and to be honest we were quite lucky to go into the break level.

Into the second half, and we scored within about 30 seconds or so sending the Town fans into raptures behind the goal - I actually went mental. It was a great pleasure to stand with Dave, Neil etc behind the goal and get a few songs going. You can tell the players respond to our enthusiasm, as from there on we just seemed to be continuously creating attempts on goal.

Out came a few classics from the Town supporters, including the "Hey Jude" song which I haven't heard for a while. Also enjoyed the Dave inspired "1-0 and you f----d it up..."

Stamford appeared to completely lose their composure after our second goal, and I'm sure they'll be dissapointed with their second half peformance.

I think at some point after our third goal, it started raining... much to the delight of several Town fans who began singing in the rain happy days indeed. In all honestly, I'm quite pleased when it starts raining because it swells the numbers under the cover producing a much better atmosphere.

All in all, a superb peformace, both from the players and from the supporters. The chants of "Easy, Easy, Easy" went up towards the end, and also the inevitable "The Town are going up"...

Life's good when you're a Town fan

See you at Rothwell.

Revenge is sweet you ol git. I was goading Paul Campbell to go it alone and he did. Awesome goal from Paul.

I think we all the regular town fans behind the goal went mental but it was a great escape.

In all the excitement we must not forget the tremendous feat achieved by Junior yesterday in selling over £330.00 pounds worth of 50/50 tickets which sent BS home with £168.00 in cash.

Now where else could you go to a non league game, spend £6.00 to get in, watch a classy second half performance, get soaked into the bargain and go home with £168.00? I do hope BS told his other half!

I wonder if the 50/50 first prize can hit the £200.00 mark against EFC?
