He had no control at all of a game that seemed to be played in a bad atmosphere between the teams and the two main decisions that had to be made in the game, Ben's goal and their penalty he got wrong on both counts.

The game was quite physical and scrappy and he never seemed to get on top of things in terms of discipline, especially with the FGR skipper Damon Searle who was running around like a headless chicken after being elbowed in the head by Jay Conroy I think it was, making all sorts of threats of retribution and being very lucky to stay on the field as a consequence.

I was in line (almost) with Ben's goal and have to say that quite clearly to me it looked as if it did not cross the line. I had a really good view of this and I would say it clearly was a bad decision by the ref and linesman, that said two wrongs don't make a right and to give Forest Green a penalty as a "make up" for this was a pathetic cop out and booking Jay Conroy on top of this for arguing about the decision was adding further fuel to the fire.

The standard of refereeing at Conference level is poor to say the least and Mr. G. Evetts performance today was cowardly and incompetent. I hope his assessor noted this too and that b*stard will not be back at Park Lane again for a long, long time or allowed to referee any game of any consequence at all.

I could cry to see the attendance today, just over 400+ was as pitiful as Mr. Evetts today but at the end of the day sadly of longer lasting concern to the club. Something has to be done to try to promote the club to entice more people along to games as our attendances have now become a joke.

Canvey are now playing at the highest ever position in the club's history and only attracting crowds like todays. If the alarm bells are not ringing at boardroom level now over this issue then they bloody well should be... <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

I didn't have a clue what the penalty was for but I was told by the referee at the end that the Canvey No23 had pulled back Meech when Alex went to try and nod the ball in from Guys blocked shot which looped up into the air towards the goal. That was the reason the player was cautioned. Had it been handball he would have had the big red card.

Be interesting to note what prices season tickets will be for next year. A few of the full-time Clubs in this league have been handing out their renewal forms already.

 

The Club MUST do something to encourage more season ticket purchases over the next few months.

Everything else in life has gone up so i can`t see season tickets and entrance prices being any different, i`d hope for a freeze in prices but i can`t see a reduction.

 

Would a reduction in prices bring a big enough increase in attendance to make up the loss? Personally i don`t think so but i`d be happy to be proved wrong.

I personally think it more viable to freeze the prices at what they stand as now because they more or less fit in with the rest of the League but offer a bit more value for money.

 

E.g. Was looking to see if other local Clubs had announced their season tickets yet, but came across info that Grays' season tickets last year were 190 pounds for an adult but could only be used for their 21 league games with no mention about the minor County Cups.

 

What I feel the Club need to do is offer a discount price on renewals before a set date - Everyone is doing this now. Also, not sure if this was exactly the same as what Southend Utd did for this season but how about a deal to the likes of when renewing/buying an adult season ticket you get a discount child's (U-16) season ticket that only costs about 46 pounds? That would be 2 pound per league game plus all the County Cups free too. If the Club feel the need, they could round it up to 50 pounds I suppose to make them feel better.

But i would guess that nearly all the people who have season tickets this season would renew them anyway (unless there was a big increase) so the club would lose out on money.

 

A family ticket would be a good idea and selling mini season tickets in blocks of 5/10 would also help people who can`t afford to stump up the full amount in one go.

Ok, so suppose for arguments that 350 of the Canvey fans there yesterday were season ticket holders and they'll all renew for next season. Realistically the Club needs to at least double that figure... How? Anyone?

I have no idea how many season ticket holders we have but it`s new blood we need to get through the gate, as you say the question is how?

All I know is that we have the two lowest home attendances in the Conference, (probably more actually) and both of them are under 500. That is, for want of a better word, incredibly tinpot!

You`ve been reading Confguide too much, everything is "Tinpot" on there unless you support an ex-league club.

 

At the moment we are punching above our weight in this league and next season we are going to have to fight very hard both on and off the pitch to retain our Conference status, i think the team will be up for it but will the fans?

 

I know this forum does not represent all the fans of the club but i`ve noticed recently that nobody really discusses games and a lot of people have stopped posting altogether, has the apathy spread?

i dont no if this changes anything but on canvey island-mad the ratings have increased dramatically from last year. 12,307 hits in March 2006 compared to 2,391 March 2005. does this show that more people are staying in now than they did last season?

We haven't any direction, we need to decide whant we want and how we are going to get there.

 

There's no point the club whinging about attendances when they make very little effort to attract new fans.

 

WE've all said it on here before, but like the website incident the club seem to react negatively to any criticism or even suggestions.

 

Personally, I will not be renewing my season ticket as I will probably miss 2 or 3 games as a result of being away. They aren't really good value.

The referee and linesman grey haired linesman were the most inept I have ever witnessed. Not just for us but for Forest Green as well. Truly embarrassing!

Our crowds now are lower than they were for the Ryman League. I know there are a lot of fair weather fans outthere who will only watch a winning team but the club really has to do something to improve their fan base.

I know they have given tickets away to Schools before and the club need to increase this as attendance wise its getting very embarrassing.

worse still are the financial implications.this gate isnt even enough to keep us where we are,let alone take us forward.

whats strange to me is that many people that i speak to on the terrace,dont even live on the island - myself included.so just why do those on the island not bother?

dont they appreciate just how well "their" club is doing?

is it that the club has moved on,but that local perception of the team hasnt?

I always felt that our crowds were poor in the Ryman League in comparison to how well we were doing. In the year we went up our average attendance was below 600!!!

Before they went bust Hornchurch a simiar size club to us were getting attendances of over 800 and this was against the likes of Maidenhead!!!

I don't think you can put it down solely to the fact we are not winning week in, week out because the attendances were hardly great in the Ryman League.

I've said before that the location of the ground isn't the best in the World, but that should be no excuse for those that do live on the island not to go there. There are two direct bus routes that involve not even a five minute walk from each stop. The bus fare or even a cab ride isn't going to break the bank for you, particularly if you're willing to put money over the clubhouse/burger/tea bars. Or, like me you could even walk! A half an hour's brisk stroll along the seawall is pretty handy after a jar or two. <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

 

I think the main contributing factor publicity wise is that apart from those wooden advertising hoardings, of which there are only about half a dozen dotted around the island, there is no CIFC promotion whatsoever staring you in the face unless you buy the Echo or bother to read the Yellow Advertiser.

 

When I come home for the Summer I would want to see the presence of CIFC burned into the back of peoples minds from constantly seeing too much promotion all over the island.

 

We definately, definately, definately, need to issue some sort of promotional poster/fixture list to every commercial/civil/educational/etc. building on the island.

 

Concord Rangers should be on their deathbed in terms of ratio of supporters compared to us. Every time I look at the another site, I get depressed from seeing our average attendance constantly falling - It's down to just 851 now. Take away our four home attendances that managed to get over 1000 and it works out to 724. Hopefully the attendances for our three remaining home fixtures will boost it back up.

I think that is a big problem, people think it is still small-time football and wonder why it costs £11-50 to get in, why is there no room in the car park, why can`t i drink on the terrace, why do i have to que for a cup of tea and so on.

I think we are very lucky to have Canvey Island Football club in the Conference on this Island. We are a small club in the grand scheme of things but have managed to claw our way up through the Pyramid to be in the highest "non-professional" league in the country. Great, but the locals dont seem to be as enthusiastic about this as most of us regulars are so there must be reasons for this. Just want to put a few reasons that may be the problem for some. Prospective fans may think like this:

Expensive (its about right actually)

"Small club" mentality

Our good times appear to be in the past

Grays doing really well

Southend playing best footie for yrs

Sky sports showing live Premier matches

General apathy

Been freezing weather lately

some fans could be away on pre-

easter hols with the kids

 

Whatever the reasons locals are not coming in their droves, one thing is for sure' the true regular fans will support the team no matter what league we are in, and that is very important.

I think us fans are finding our teams performance a bit dull and boring; you know kick it up in the air and hope!I suggest that we all take a close look at Glen Cockerill on Tuesday. If all is not well even before half time he changes things, new formation, subs etc., and what about his post-match interviews, intelligent and fair comment, never fails to praise his teams efforts, no wonder they respond in the next game. I think you will agree we need more team motivation by the management team, try new formations use the subs a bit more sensibly; after all if players are not up to standard they shouldn't even be at the club, whether sitting in the stand or on the bench, if they are lets play them! I feel that sometimes we are living in the past sentimently supporting previous seasons players when we should be looking to our newer players, they are our future we need to play them now or they will leave, we must support them.
