Ben Abbey

Good grief !!!

I was one of the few people who stuck up for Ben when he was here ( yes, that penalty is still crap...but move on !!).......as Joni Mitchell said...... you don't know what you've got till it's gone !!

For the benefit of younger viewers, Joni is not in Eastenders !

cheers,

Playing up front for Met Police with former trialist Adolf Amaoko.

Those who slagged him off are no better than those who slagged off Rawle yesterday.

Congratulations to the moron who shouted that it was 85 minutes too late as he was being subbed after getting injured.

What has happened to Ben.We could sure do with some one like him to give our goal shy attack a bit more pace, and he knows where the goal is.With full time training, and he's only 27,I feel he would more than fit the bill. B.B.B.(Bring Back Ben)

Strangely enough bumped into Ben today at a game. He manages the year older team than one of my kids for same club.

I think his team talk would differ from Daishes' some what , as it comprimsed of battle em early on, earn the right then samba and make sure you express yourself, and then samba some more. I made my debut at Goodison Park, I know what its about. ( Anyone who has followed Bens career knows that he was not signed in time by Oxford to make his debut Everton but lets not let mere details get in the way)

Didn't hang about for the result or the samba, so no idea how successful it was.

But Ben approaches the game the right way and his enthusiasm and will to win rubs off on the kids, albeit can sometimes be a bit too fizzy for senior pro's at clubs and hence he ends up leaving.

I for one would have Ben back like a shot, even just for his enthusiasm alone let alone his goal per appearance record which was / is as good as anybodies in a Fleet shirt. And better than most at conference lever.

The guy is a winner, just a pity the boo boys at the Fleet as usual picked the wrong 'un to boo.

If we were looking for a full time pro to take the footabll to the local kids , Ben would be our man.

Its just a shame about the penalty. (especially as I have seen him hit right foot , left foot , back heels into the top corner !!)

PS. Wish I had seen this post earlier , it would have made his day .

PPS. My best memory of Ben was FGR away as both my boys were at training courses the week previous at which Ben was a coach. He was the ultimate proffessional and hit down hard on discipline.

I took both to the game however Ben was booked within 10 minutes and taken off prior to 25 minutes as lost plot with referee and a sending off was inevitable.. Oh how my kids chuckled and Fleet won as well.

it may well have been Bens last game .

Up the Fleet

I may be missing something here, but I have seen no performances by Rawle so far which suggest he is to be bracketted with Ben Abbey, the latter being a 10(?)goal a season man, the former having the first touch of a wall...

The point that Jimmy was making, I suspect, is that some people were calling for him to be substituted, when there was no-one else available to play up front in his place.

Service for the forwards is lacking at present, so it would be harsh to judge Rawle on games like Saturday's. While his first touch is often not the best, he has other attributes (e.g. bringing others into play, battling qualities) that make any jeering of him pretty senseless.

You're correct in your praise for Ben, though. Rawle may not have his scoring record so far, but that doesn't mean he deserves disparaging comments from the stands.

I thought the plan was for the club to go forward....not backwards.

Ben Abbey can and should be confined to the club's history books alongside the likes of Omoyinmi, Coleman, etc.

Yes, because bringing back Jacko and Jay was such a bad decision, wasn't it?

Also, the phrase 'the likes of Omoyinmi, Coleman...' is rather bizarre, given the difference in quality between those two based on their performances for us.

Ben wouldn't necessarily get as many goals as Charlie would in a season free of injury. But we could do a lot worse than having him back.

Can't believe the way some people talk of Manny on here tbh. Towards the end of last season I thought he was one of our best players when he played and weren't injured. He had a severe loss of form this season but you can no way say he's as bad as Rawle or Coleman.

First off Colemans crap and just couldn't cut the mustard. To talk about him in the same light as any of the other two is wrong.

Manny came to the club when we we're on a high, even Roy Essandoh was scoring against the teams were playing then. Don't get me wrong Manny is a good player and one I was sorry to see go but I just don't think we've seen the best of Rawle yet.

Rawle is the man that creates space for people like Charlie to run into. People doubt his first touch but this is when he is given hopelessly long balls to run onto, give him the ball to his feet and then see what he can do.

Of all the four players mentioned, including Abbey who I never saw play so can't comment, the player that needs our support the most is the man that currently wears the shirt for the club.

Get behind Rawle and all the lads.

Every time you open your mouth Harry you manage to make yourself look a bigger prat. <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/applaus.gif" alt="" />
If you had been around at the time you would know that it wasn't a case of 'even Roy Essandoh was scoring' the club was on a high because of Roy Essandoh.

Oh insults, I've clearly lost out to the higher intellect here.

Member of the club again speaks out yet we still don't get to find out who he/she is.

Roy Essandoh had three good months playing for GNFC. Three out of what 12? I can only go on what I saw. I saw Roy Essandoh week after week putting in poor performance after poor performance. Nice guy as I've been told but basically not good enough.

I just find it sad that members of the club or those close to it feel the need to come on this message board and say what they think without telling us who they are. If your so sure of yourself "The Truth" then come out from under your guise and tell us who you really are, if your man enough that is.

Ok Harry - could you explain what sort of chance Liam gave Manny in terms of appearances before getting rid of him?

In my opinion, Liam was wrong to get rid of Manny - Roy, however was player in a '2 year contract comfort zone'. Although, at the time, the club WAS on a high because of the goals Roy scored.

Without getting involved in the mud slinging and insults i thought Roy Essandoh was a good player, who was fairly good in both the air and with his feet, but was frozen out like so many other players have been, maybe it,s the Glenn Hoddle style of management. If your not in the first team i dont talk to you style!!!!

'Coleman couldn't cut the mustard'?? Hahaha classic!! Fair enough, so far Rawle has been pretty useless, however, take Ben for a prime example. The majority of fans were slagging him off, questioning his place in the first eleven, but after a few weeks/months, he found his footing. There was the penalty against Accrington in October, and then vs Margate in December, he was brilliant, and continued in that vein of form for a while. Maybe we've yet to see the best of Mark? And if we haven't, slagging him off for 90 minutes isn't exactly the key to unlock his potential!! If you've got that much to say, go and stant next to the drum and sing along!!

I'm not really saying Manny should have gone, at the start of the season he didn't look his best but that doesn't mean I think he necessarily should have gone.

People are saying though that he is better than Rawle. Weak arguement as for 1 they are two different types of player and 2 one plays for us now and the other one doesn't. Thirdly, one could be offered a contract next season and the other one won't. Finally I'm always right, how many more do you want?

When you are talking about crap forwards, you really must mean the likes of Sigere and Coleman; Roy and Manny COULD be brilliant, when the mood/fitness took them.

Howarth proved a valuable striker, prevented from furthering his Fleet career by following his chosen police career.

Rawle and Moore are the best we are going to get this year. Accept it.

I suspect the board will ask for a major cull close season to rebuild a better balanced team with more emphasis on actually scoring goals, whilst at present Liam's philosophy appears to be building a team of defensive left backs and left sided centre halves.

Hopefully, once our "loan players" have departed, we can actually sign a couple of strikers to assist and take some of the workload and physical battering from Charlie, allowing Rawle to fight for a place and young Moore the chance to add a couple of stone to his skinny physique, which should enhance his Conference credibilty.
