Don't lose the nil

Our current formation is clearly taking a lot of effort for the players to get to grips with. But I don't think the manager would be comfortable changing it after all these years. He must have faith in it and I trust he knows his job better than I do. After all it is the same formation that has done us so well in the past. Any formation is only as good as the players that are in it.

There is a lot to be said for 4-4-2.

1. It is much easier to adapt to events during the game. For example you can push a player forward without leaving a big gap.

2. Every player knows how to play it. With our system you have to give new players a couple of games to see if they can adapt, and if they can't your system will be disrupted.

3. If you are struggling with injuries etc., it's easier to fill gaps because there are fewer 'specialist' positions.

4. You could play Sesay on the right of midfield without having to worry about his defensive tackling. In fact if he is good enough you could play 4-3-3 with Sesay and Brayley supporting Hockon in the middle. To do that you need creative midfielders who defend well, in other words Keister at his best and another two, but not Yiga and Hilaire because they are not good enough at disposessing and blocking.

Also we have the players now for the system we play. I can't see a place for Allman Oates or Standen in 4-4-2, and in addition to midfielders we would need at least one more pure defender, with another for the bench.

The bottom line is, we all know Chris Kinnear ain't going to change. As other people have said, he got us to the top of non-league with his system and might well do again. If we were going to be a 4-4-2 side it would have to be with a different boss, and I think we should see what happens next season before we make a judgement.
