Wealdstone's Beckford Goes To Leeds

Hope Leeds are patient with him as despite being a good goalscorer i'm not sure he is as techincally gifted and gets involved as much as Gareth McCleary for example. They will have to be patient with him - but good luck to him - great move

The statement on the Leeds Official site says they'll give him plenty of time to settle in and find his feet. Quite a hefty sum involved as well by all acounts, probably more than £40k. I guess their Premier status depends on who they can get in to replace Beckford's goals....

Chris, you can't just put players on contract as they are a two-way thing and the players would have to want to sign a contract as well. Whilst I'm not suggesting the club would keep the player if they felt any fee offered wasn't big enough would you, as a player, sign a contract if you knew pro clubs were looking at you and you thought the above situation might arise?

I'll give you an example:- Joe Bloggs signs a contract but insists on a clause that says he must be released if a pro club wants him. The following game he breaks his leg and all interest suddenly ceases but the club still has to pay his full wages for the remainder of the contract! Say he's on £400 a week, that's £400 a week gone from the budget while he's injured [presuming he ever comes back to full fitness] and you're left a striker short unless you can find extra money for your weekly budget to replace him!

Whilst I started by saying contracts are a two-way thing, any player with a modicum of brains can ensure any contract he signs is weighted heavily in his favour and not necessarily of any benefit to the club other than stopping him leaving to join a club at the same level.

Well done Chels, very observant. Seems to be a very high figure to be using for a player at this level, particularly at Wealdstone, to be earning on a weekly basis. Windsor_Sec is obviously used to working with those sort of figures....

I should get that seen to Nibbler, sounds like bird flu to me.

Gary, it's not a particularly high figure for a decent striker at this level [not that we would know what a decent striker was]. I used that figure to demonstrate the impact on the budget it could have if the player is out injured for any length of time!

With regards to working with those sort of figures I can only suggest you look closer to home before worrying what anyone else is doing!

[You can ask me personally about that next time you see me!].

Good to know you pay crocked players.

As a side issue Windsor Sec, I was wondering if you could clear up a hypothetical situation for me, though will understand if you choose not to reply.

Would a club (for example Windsor) continue to pay a player under contract throughout a period of suspension, if he manages to rack up a ban of say a dozen matches or so, if he claims to be a victim and is the captain of the side?

I know for example that Manchester United paid Mr Ferdinand throughout his lengthy suspension. I just wonder if contracts for players at this level would continue to be met in such mitigating circumstances as those detailed above hypothetically

BFR, there's no way I'm going to reply to your question simply because it would take an hour or more to do so with all the various nuances of contracts and when you can or can't pay players.

If you really want to know [as opposed to having a wind-up about Jarvis!] than ask me at your game next Wednesday and you can read the FA Handbook!
