Game off today - waterlogged pitch

I was there just after 1pm and the pitch was still being rolled then to try to get the game on. Apparently the pitch was actually under water this morning.

After it was called off I walked on the edge of the pitch and water was squeezking out from under my shoes so in the centre circle and penalty areas it would have been awful.

The only game in Ryman league called off says it all for the real state of the pitch. good job there hasn;t been much rain this season because by the looks of it most of our games would have been postponed. Its not as if there has been that much rain today. Its pretty orbvios the pitch has been lain in too much of a hurry and no thought to proper drainage has been taken in consideration. I hope when and if the pitch is turned this problem is put right.

Agreed thankfully we have had very little rain since the pitch was laid. We are clearly very lucky. I hope things can be sorted out and take advantage of a few dry days ahead to get rid of the water. Bit of rain forecast towards the end of the week but the general trend seems to be for very cold weather to return. Is it true the drainage pipes were concreted shut by mistake when they were laid?

As I understand it the drainage was not completed so it drains into the middle of the pitch and cannot run away. The only bonus of turning the pitch in the summer would be to finish the drainage and increase the 8 (yes only 8) inches of top soil.

Shame radio kent did not broadcast the postpoment. Took gary Hyde down today from west kent. Met guy from Sevenoaks and two from sandwhich. CK very apologetic as the gentleman he is, still took in training in the park the lads all looked keen. Then it snowed so we came home via Welling. Saw shay score and Maidenheads last gasp equalizer. Poor crowd,

Very well said there Joseba,If they had taken note of the groundsman who wanted 18 inches of top soil before laying the turf, this game would have gone ahead,we have not had that much rain this week, but the pitch is under water, says it all. <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/mad.gif" alt="" />

Let's be clear, this was always a temporary position for the pitch, and given the cost implications of building in "full" drainage systems, it is not a particular surprise. I would echo the sentiments mentioned elsewhere about the effort that went into putting the game on. Ray was rolling the pitch with the new "sponge mower" when I got there, and had been at it on other days this week too. Watching the pitch inspection and the way the "test balls" hardly bounced at all, it was clearly the right decision. I also know that the directors tried to contact as much of the local media as possible.

Here's hoping for favourable weather over the next week.
