Hi CS.

It would be wrong to say that Hertfordshire is a cultural desert, but it has limited attractions for a 14 year old French boy, I would have thought!

There's Shaw's Cottage at Ayot St Lawrence followed by lunch in that little pub nearby but I find it [shaw's cottage, not the Pub] very bland.

The Railway Museum at Tring is bland for me, too, and as the National Trust's Thingummyjig House at Aylesbury is in the style of a French Chateau, it's hardly typical Olde England, I would have thought. And in Aylesbury, it's not Hertfordshire, is it.

Depending on timing there are often events at Knebworth but they range from 'Classic car' shows to Advanced Embroidery displays so it's pot-luck,. What about the County Show at Redbourn? That's a good day out. Check what events are on at Hatfield House. These things are advertised in the local press but only in the two weeks beforehand.

For me, I would 'do' London. A trip on one the tourist boats from Westminster pier to Greenwich and back is a great followed by a ride on one of those tourist open-top buses [go for the maroon stripped ones - I think they're called 'The Original Bus co' or some-such - they have great live commentary] and to finish, a burger/pizza in the Sportsman's Cafe/bar in Haymarket[?] is it? Next to Leicester Square. Now that would be a good day out for a 14 year old French boy, I would have thought.

Bon chance, mon ami.

Cheers AFF - You've come to the same conclusion that I have - the school is covering the London angle so it looks like either Knebworth House or Whipsnade (which is in Beds !). Of course there's always good old Verulamium

Funny that there seem so few 'tourist' things to do in Herts - but I still think of it as God's county (maybe because it's so natural and doesn't need to rely on artificial attractions)

Also thanks to everybody else for their suggestions
