Part Timers

Recommended Posts

I heard a suggestion today that there are no longer the evening training sessions for them to get involved. I know the issue of evening sessions was discussed previously on here, but if its true that they arent happening now (and I havent seen confirmation of this), its just plain daft & makes it so much harder for part timers to remain at the club.

I have a horrible feeling there will be no place at the club for the likes of Provs, Ports and Skins next season, partly because of their age, and partly becauuse of their part time status.

Jacko and Macca will be kept because of their standing at the club, as will Jay, who still has age on his side.

Sad, but that is progress I suppose.

We must halt the trend of getting in loads of loan players, though.

Often no better than players already here, and Liam must feel an obligation to play them over contracted players.

It also seems to contradict suggestions by the club at the time the move to full-time football was announced that those who wanted to remain part-time would remain valued members of the squad.

But let's be realistic about our current part-time players - Skinner's likely not got another Conference season in him, Porter's very probably on his way, Jackson can fit in some full-time training around his work, while McKimm and Saunders still seem to be valued members of the team.

That really leaves only Protheroe being given any perceived 'cold shoulder', and I'd say he's being kept out of the team on merit by Gooding. Rather than any insidious anti-part-time thing by the manager, I think it's just a natural end for a lot of these players, popular and loyal as they have been.

Agreed - but that doesn't cover the issue of reduced opportunities for the part-timers to train.

As has been suggested before, surely full-timers are supposed to be available all the time, meaning that evening training for all players, whether part-time or full-time, makes most sense.

Jimmy Hill , if he was dead, would be turning in his grave.

Jimmy pioneered the the thought that if you played football matches in the afternoon. You should train in the afternoon, to enable your body to become accustomed to being drained at that time of day.

So not only did he pioneer the demolition of the wage capping , he also pioneered afternoon training sessions into the game, something that was not heard of beforehand.

But as we now appear to be playing most games in the evening beit a Friday or a Tuesday maybe you have a point.

If there has to be some flexibility and give and take this must come from the full-time players and the full-time manager. It must be very much harder for a part-time player to organise attending training sessions to fit in with their main employment than a full-timer. But all of this is speculation. Or is it? I also heard on Saturday that Liam doesn't announce who will be playing until all of the players are at the ground (home or away) on a match day. I suppose it is a means to get fringe players to attend just in case they may be selected.

It has to be said, though, that our approach to full-time football is very much at odds with other clubs: however good or loyal players were with other clubs that went full-time (Aldershot and Accrington spring to mind), if those player didn't want to sign full-time contracts, they were - for the most part - out.

Now whether this was a financial move by GNFC, or one made out of loyalty to part-time players, I don't know, but I think the time has come to either be fully full-time or to stay part-time. This halfway house doesn't really work for anyone, and I don't think we'd be losing anyone irreplaceable (and I say that as someone who held Protheroe and Skinner in high esteem as among my favourite players at the club).

It's a bit of an unfortunate situation for Proths. When he has come in to replace Gooding in the last few months he hasn't been at his best, but the flipside of that is that it isn't really fair to expect him to produce his best form instantly whenever he returns to the team.

I spoke to Liam about this this evening, and it's another myth to add to "Liam wants more money to train in the evenings".

I can't work out where these stories originate from and why, but this one can now also be confined to the dustbin of history.

There was also an invitation from Liam for anyone who wants to go to the evening sessions. The only stipulation is that they must come by car and park facing the training area with their lights on to supplement the portable floodlights that the players have to work under.
